Mendel uses belt pulleys in driving it's x,y and z axis as well as in it's driven z axis threaded rods. The problem is that many cheap 3d printers such as the Makerbot, RepRap, etc. are still working on being able to print accurate parts. The lack of symmetry in these parts caused by printer inaccuracy can then cause further inaccuracy in the child printer. This is a version of each gear in Mendel that can be cut by a high precision laser cutter or CNC mill so as to increase the precision of Mendel.
This page/project has been abandoned since I am using printed part for the time being. You are more then welcome to take over ownership and design some excellent laser cut pulleys! --TheOtherRob 06:58, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Design/Usage
For each pulley a series of pulley parts (those marked with the pulley suffix) are laser cut and stacked until the gear is tall enough (the number of pulley parts you will need depends on the thickness of your material). Then a nut trap piece is laser cut from a peice of material no taller then Z_HEIGHT and a final pulley piece is placed on top and then tightened down onto an entrapped nut.
