Server migration

News: The current server has had the number of Apache threads increased, this is to speed up browsing and avoid migration.

Plans to move Reprap.org from a free virtual server to a commercial dedicated server.

A number of users of the Reprap IRC channel are unhappy with the speed and functionality of the Reprap.org site believing it reflects poorly on the project as a whole, putting off potential new users who's first experience of Reprap is a slow site that looks neglected.

We have a replacment server up and running since 11th January 2013. http://178.239.162.66/ We're now waiting for access to the user generated content on the current server.

Proposal: The plan is currently to Replace the slow Reprap.org site on a shared server with a dedicated server running in a world class London datacenter. This would initially be a server farms 1Gb/second connection going to a HP proliant server (Donated by SeeMeCNC ), running openBSD and hosting Drupal content management system. When the load on that server approaches 75% a second identical server is ready to be brought in, when we start hosting larger files University mirror sites will be used. is that if we mirror now there will be no mayor change when we start hosting large files.

Migration: A site new.reprap.org would be created. Data from the origina servers database would be migrated, when it is decided by all that test.reprap.org and reprap.org have the same content then the original site would be become old.reprap.org and the new server(s) take over the domain.

""Funding"" The Reprap project needs to be able to fund monthly rent and hardware upgrades from now on. I would like a model of funding used by openBSD where they sold files on CD and branded clothing, to this end I have approached Wim Vanderputte for help.

Where: This is the proposed datacenter is a Safehost site It's next to London Bridge station and has direct fiber connection all over the World, it's one of the most environmentally friendly datacenters as it uses water cooling.

Monthly cost
Rack space £15 per U
Power - £25 per 0.5A
100Mb Port - £25 per server
1000Mb Port - £45 per server
Additional Public V4 IP’s at £1
Then add 20% UK VAT.

Why London? There are a few Reprap users who are systems administrators who live in London.

Hardware: The servers offered are two HP ProLiant DL385 G2 Servers donated by SeeMeCNC, these will need to be shipped from the USA and are 2U. Before two years if would have been cheaper if we had bought a new server due to the extra costs of running a large old server. A possible cheap new server is this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/ProLiant-DL120-E3-1220-4GB-U-Server/dp/B004ZHCTHG/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1357850687&sr=1-1

Content management system: The proposed new content management system is Drupal, which would replace the current CMS MediaWiki. The reason for doing this is to make the site future proof as Drupal can have any service easily tacked onto the site where as MediaWiki can't even run a webshop.
