DIYtechshop Bad Experiences

DIYtechshop Bad Experiences I ordered an i3xl from diytechshop in December 2013. Upon assembling the printer I realized that two of the z axis smooth rods were not shipped with the kit. DIYtechshop claims "We will help with any questions you have, or we can point you in the right direction to find a solution, we will also replace or exchange defective or damaged parts** for 30 days." I emailed DIYtechshop about the missing parts, about two printed parts that broke during assembly, and asked a question to clarify an assembly question I had. The email was sent 12/28/2013. As of 1/12/2014, DIYtechshop has not replied. I have a bunch more information on them if anyone wants it. I just want this info in people hands before they buy.
I'm going to aggressively pursue this until I get my money back but I'm still pissed off because even when I get it I will have given them a 900 dollar interest free loan. I paid with my debit card
so I don't have Paypal recourse. If I have to file in Clark County WA small claims court then I'll seek additional damages. I hate having to deal with this crap but I've found that you just have to muscle through it if you want people like this to shape up or shut down. My friend was looking over what they sent me and it's difficult to not just start putting it together because we KNOW we can make it work but that's not going to help change the situation. They suck at businesses and shouldn't be rewarded for it.
Meh, enough blowing off steam for now. No e-mails response, some phone response with empty promises and no printer after 7 weeks, and counting.

Here's the Short story...
I recieved unusable Plastic parts--all of them were bad
Promised to overnight replacements parts--twice, never did
Stopped answering calls and never returned any of my 5 or 6 messages
Replacement parts finally arrived, but was missing 2 parts
Still no communication
Recently discovered they originally sent 3mm extruder instead of 1.75

I've filed a dispute with my credit card. Maybe hitting them in the pocket book will get a response...

I can't recommend this company to anyone.

hope to see some photos from this printer here soon...::o At the time when I bought the i3XL this new printer wasn´t available and the i3XL was the best I could get. Maybe I will order this printer later this year, shouldn´t be a problem to sell mine here in Austria.

In the meantime I´ve got some respone from DIY Shop to my emails. I´ve used the sales@diytechshop.com and found out that this email adress works best. I´ve got several email supporting me the last week and can honestly say that the things are getting better there. Now as with anything like this type of product people. These along with almost all "Rep Rap" machines are more like " pre-production prototypes.
So the (Walmart) mentality is the wrong approach. Work with your suppliers. Give yourself a good time frame. And take your time.

Honestly when we ordered from them, the little voice in my head did see this. Im thinking to give them a honest chance to over come their growing pains. From what Im gathering they need more printers running plastic. As opposed to sending them out. (J/P).. As with my products we fall into a similar situation. To charge them back will only push the problem onto the next guy and kill a promising product source. Most likely me. lol. Im about ready to send them an email and see if their is some way they can be helped. (Molds etc) ;)
I have been in the rapid prototyping business before it was even a term. We make and create with all sorts and for all. AND ALWAYS the one thing that kills things is timing. Now with this, I have always claimed "Our quality has long been remembered after the price (and timing) is forgotten."
I have also placed "my issues" of piss poor planning "upon them" as I TOO asked to receive my machine within the ten days as I have a few pieces for a tier one automotive company and my other machine is down. Big program. I have to be honest and say I REALLY need this machine and am thinking Craigs list if I have to to make the deadline. And will be genuinely bummed.
BUT in the long term. We have all ordered from them based on two obvious facts. Design and price. At the end of the day. Im certain I will be happier with this setup not only for aesthetics, but for the size and price. I actually found this thread prior to my order. And considered just building one. But as you are all aware after you spend the time and money. Your going to go through more than the above. Ive read about the hot end and (of course) Im sure theres alot of starter pieces. Already know to think this way as is with anything extra parts are always an excuse for an upgrade.. lol

Made in the U.S.A.,,,,,, ;) Being forced to by a kit from china was going to kill me personally... I know the parts come from there but Id rather support US
I will be the first to praise the ground they walk on if my machine arrives on time.. And if it doesn't ,is my fault.. Their not Walmart, theirs actually real live bodys on the other end that are working to give me a good bargain and with the hope Im going to receive and see it as such...

I explained that the delivery time was critical to me because I needed to have the printer fully functional for a class I will be teaching during the second week in March. I was able to build a Prusa Mendel I2 and get it running in about two weeks. So I figured that was enough time.

They told me that their lead time was two weeks and that they it would take 2-3 days to ship to me. The kit arrived today with all the plastic parts missing. No explanation, no expected delivery date, no communication whatsoever.

Supposedly there are documents available for download when you log in after making a purchase. There were none available for the printer on my account. I emailed the person in sales who responded to my original questions indicating that I would like to have a copy of the build instructions for their variation on the Prusa i3. No response for a week. I emailed them again no response. I was about to email them a third time on Tuesday to cancel the order when I received a form message indicating that the printer had shipped so I didn't cancel the order. It turned out that it did not actually ship until late on Wednesday. I still do not have a copy of the build documents or access to them through my account at this company.

When I discovered that the printed parts were missing, I emailed them to get a refund. If I don't hear back I guess I will have to dispute the charges with my credit card company and see if that wakes them up.

I just checked the website and a few things have changed since I placed my order. In my original email I noted that they had dropped the price after I ordered and asked them if they would refund the difference. There is now a note on the website saying that they do not do this. Apparently they had time to change the website, but not to respond to my email.

They have also edited the site to say that printed parts may be five days behind. due to weather conditions in the northeast. Apparently they did not feel that it was important to communicate this information to me directly or at the time I ordered when I explained that I was on a tight schedule.

I find the way these guys operate to be very unprofessional and not at all businesslike. I am going to be in a really tight spot time wise because of their BS. I built my i2 from a kit from NW reprap and I had a great experience in terms of the delivery, documentation, quality and support they provided. Email was answered in a matter of hours, I had two minor problems with parts which were resolved immediately no questions asked. These guys are clearly amateur league by comparison.

From what I gather reading around the web, there are a lot of other people who have had problems with them both in terms of quality and customer service. All I can say is if you are considering doing business with them pay attention to all the negative feedback. I wish I had. Spend the extra money and avoid the hassle and aggravation. My guess is you will wind up saving money in the long run anyway.

Oh, and Styrofoam packing peanuts? Really? I don´t understand WHAT makes you that crazy but for sure I don´t want to taste it myself...

1. The download link to the 7z file with the DIY Tech modified firmware is offered through a log-in, you receive the log-in credentials right after placing your order. This tells me that you´ve never ordered anything there otherwise you would have known..

2. I´ve attached the configuration.h file from the download link at DIY Tech Shop and would kindly ask you, to show me that //#define REPRAP_DISCOUNT_SMART_CONTROLLER in this file. I tell you what: It isn´t there because they skiped some settings of the original build for any reason I don´t know. The Marlin firmware from DIY Tech Shop has 44k and the official one about 115k. That is why I use a firmware version modified from the official Marlin page. The only thing you CAN find in the DIY Tech modified firmware is:

When you order from DIY tech shop, in your account there is a file download section. Only customers that purchase from them can see and download the firmware. Their version of the firmware was not the most up to date and was missing several includes. ciutateivissa really has done a very good job of troubleshooting problems and working thru issues. He even has to supply his own missing and broken parts due to the shipping cost. He really is only asking for support, which DIY Tech Shop says they offer on their website. DIY tech shop STILL to this day does not respond to all their emails. Either they have a problem with their email/server or they simply pick and choose what they want to respond to.

Yes, the price is low, probably the best you can get in US and probably would cost you almost as much to self source if you do not already have any parts. But the website says they offer support and some people like to pay for support. In their build it isn´t that obvious how to configure that and any helpfull documentation in the configuration.h file is missing as well. They managed to write their name in this config file, but failed in commenting the right setting for the LCD or even upgrade to a never firmware.

I´m anyway not using the original DIY distribution of the Marlin firmware but if I read in this forum that DIY TEch Shop is answering 150 email per day I´m just laughing.. The last 14 day´s my email was not answered and if they would invest more time in good parts and proper documentation it would be half of the work for them and far less costs.

That why I have to say that - overall - the quality and the service is poor. I didn´t bought the kit there to save 50 or 100 bucks but because I thought it would be a good choice...

And in the end I will not even get my parts sent or the broken replaced because i live in Europe and the shipping cost will probably top the cost of the parts itself. But at least some support would have been nice, that does not even cost money...

The one they are offering is "One Reprap discount smart controller." which has been supported for almost a year in Marlin because I have used it back in March/April of last year.

In fact I just looked it up, the ReprapDiscount smart controller has been in Marlin since November 6, 2012.

This comes down to an issue of inexperience and not researching, I highly doubt they are shipping controllers with Marlin older than November 6, 2012.

Furthermore, how would you know what sketch/firmware/settings were loaded? It is very difficult to get it back from the Arduino and going by the fact you couldn't figure the LCD out I doubt you would be able to do that. Also, like I said before I doubt they would re-configure the firmware just to add the LCD support because this is something YOU SHOULD BE DOING and something YOU SHOULD KNOW HOW TO DO because the firmware settings ALL DIFFER. Not saying what they did was right but Marlin and Repetier (the two most common firmwares now) both support and have supported LCDs for a while. It's like 2 settings in the firmware to turn the LCD on or off. I feel you are yet another of those that buy a printer and think it should just work when plugged in. This may be the case for a few (very few) but if you have to build it, you can guarantee that you should be looking at the firmware.

Yes, they forgot hardware...not sure how you forgot the threaded rods that are nearly 16" long but the firmware is your responsibility. It has many settings that can be tweaked for quality, you may need to adjust the thermistor or PID settings, travel, speed, and set up the endstops. You can also tell you have done no research on the firmware since you are complaining about a setting that is set just by removing "//" and changing a number to define the type of LCD. I see the LCD is an option so I don't see why they would go through and pre-configure everything when you should be doing it yourself.

So put your big boy pants on, open the Arduino IDE and learn to use the firmware. From what I seen, the i3xl included everything except a power supply for a very low price of $475. I was quite happy with it, because on first sight there weren´t many parts missing, just some washers and the wing nuts for the printer bed. But after starting with the built I realized 2 things:
- too many parts are missing
- the quality of some parts are really poor

In the meantime I managed to put the printer together at least all the mechanical stuff, including the belts and the extruder. I had many of the problems mentioned in the threads here in this forum as well, so e.g. I had to repair some plastic parts and replace nuts or threadened rods. This was one of the really nasty things that many of the nuts didn´t fit on the threaded rods, cause it takes time to find out. Fortunately I´ve many of the needed hardware in stock and a great toolset as well, so I managed to get around almost all problems.

The entire list of missing parts:

4x wing nuts
16x nut 8mm
2x threadened rods 400mm
3x endstops

The provide firmware does not meet the reqirements on the printer (e.g. LCD) and there was no answer to my email from DIY Tech Shop whe I asked kindly for some support.. With a lot of help from some forum members here in this forum I finally got the printer nearly working, but failed to print so far. But I know now, that some parts are not working:

The list of parts which are not working:

- 1 stepper motor from the extruder (tested on my printer and with stepper driver from my CNC milling machine)
- Arduino and / or RAMPS board, i´m still investigating on that

One of the biggest problems for me so far is that the "manual" is not really helpfull, it misses to many steps in the built process. Moreover the "Manual" does not contain anything regading the software or settings, not even a hint, what the programms are that you will definitely need for printing (Pronterface, Skeinforge a.s.o)

The LCD gets power from the Arduino, Ramps power does not go to the Arduino unless the diode is present. If the diode is present and you don't have power to the Arduino then something is wrong. I actually went to the reprap site and refrenced every componet on the board and yea its there. I am thinking something happned to it.

I supply it with a 12v / 15a power supply i got from rat shack and im pretty sure it worked for a short period of time. Really at this point i could care less about the darn thing although some day i will want it to work on its own.

Question for anyone out there is can i just use a usb to wall plug ( aka phone charger ) to power the lcd when its not attached ?

Yes, the LCD gets its power from the Arduino so any type of power to the Arduino will work, be it the barrel connector or the USB plug. Ok first I am sure who ever runs this board can do a fast ip search and figure that out one person isnt just being mean.

Now falwty99 the X end stop worked ok for me with the zip tie plan(that said i had to solder the wires on because there isnt enough room to fit the connector between the bottom of the end stop and the ground ). Y end stop i ended up micro drilling and putting a screw though the plastic on y-0 side to hold it. - Works for now..

Z i used a hand cut piece of sterophome and some good old fassioned duct tape to hold together until i could print an endstop mount

- The LCD problem im still dealing with strange that you are as well, Mine seems ok as long as its got usb power but doesnt self power anymore. My next plan is to try a usb wall charger.

- Additionally since the excruder head moves when it gets plastic forced into it i use an m8 washer hold that in place but its alittle fun to thead after that.

- See attached picture it should help as well. - Wireing diagram that helped me allot. d9 is actually where your fan goes. Thank the reprap irc gods for that tidbit.

edit: also going to add in here they did send me the wrong firmware make sure you have the version with lcd support.

Is the D1 diode on Ramps present? It is located under X axis driver(remove power from board before removing driver) and this diode is required to power the Arduino from power supplied to Ramps through the detachable plug.
