        <title>RAMPS for Due!</title>
        <description>I have been working on a prototype, porting code and its looking good so far. I have got comms, steppers going and just working on temperature control. There&#039;s a few snafus on the board that will need fixing.

There are schematics etc for the prototype here https://github.com/bobc/bobc_hardware/tree/master/RAMPS-FD. Firmware will be over here https://github.com/bobc/R2C2_Firmware/tree/edge but the repo is a bit out of date.

Soon I hope to hook up a printer and I will push v1 code.

There IS an Arduino Due under there, trust me!

I would claim FIRST but I am pretty sure RepRapPro have code running on the Due, so maybe SECOND?

Just playing around with the RAMPS-FD from Geeetech...<br />

Want to install on an i3, which has 2 stepper motors for the Z axis.<br />

On the regular RAMPS, or even RADDS, there are 2 headers for the Z axis.<br />
<br />
The RAMPS-FD only seems to have a single header for the Z axis.<br />
<br />
Any ideas how I can simply set up the second Z axis stepper motor?<br />

            <description><![CDATA[ Ah, it's quite sad seeing Angelo saying stuff like that about ESP8266.<br />
I got my ESP running with RADDS and even uploading files (~2 minutes for a 1.5 mb, lol). It is quite neat to spend $3 instead of ~$70 (raspberrypi + wifi dongle) for wifi monitoring feature.<br />
I normally physically take SD card out of printer, put a bunch of g-code files for a day on it, put it back in printer and just look how it goes and start-stop the jobs from my phone with ESP8266.<br />
@dc42 ESP8266 can be powered from RADDS' I2C +V pin that is 3.3V from DUE afaik. Tried that and it works. What made me add a 5V-&gt;3V regulator is that connection is pretty ugly: you have to pull a wire from other part of the board and it just asks to be tangled in and come loose... :-D]]></description>

The ESP8266 has low bandwidth, so I suspect it will never be able to provide a decent file upload speed. However, monitoring printer status and sending manual gcodes doesn't need much bandwidth. So perhaps it would be good enough for that.<br />

The PanelDue controller also works with a 5" touch display, and I hope to qualify a 7" touch display within the next few days. The latest firmware supports up to 4 extruders on the 4.3" display, and up to 6 on the larger displays.]]></description>

            <description><![CDATA[ I successfully used the RAMPS-FD, and although it is definitely beta-quality, it was a good board until I destroyed it (a high power stepper driver blew up and took out a bunch of other stuff with it).<br />

If you read the comments in this thread, you can figure out how to make reasonably good use of it.<br />
<br />
However, like most 3D printer controller boards, it is dangerous to leave it alone for any length of time. For this board, it is a little worse than that, for example if processor power goes off (disconnected USB), then the heaters go on continuously, so you will turn your extruder into an aluminum torch.<br />
<br />
So by all means, experiment with it if you have it, but be careful.<br />
<br />
My next purchase is likely to be the replicape version B that is on kickstarter: [<a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1924187374/replicape-a-smart-and-quiet-3d-printer-control-boa" target="_blank"  rel="nofollow">www.kickstarter.com</a>]<br />
<br />
The drawback is you still have to buy a beaglebone. But the combination of the two should be darn near the best combination you can get for a high speed 3D printer.]]></description>

A modular Electronic Setup is not easy, because you have 1000 options and possibilitys and extension and and and.<br />

There is a thread in the Developers section describing how to add a $3 ESP8266 board to a RADDS to get wifi. It won't give you fast upload to the SD card like the Duet does, but for controlling the printer from a tablet instead of using an LCD, it may be adequate. I don't believe RADDS has an onboard 5V regulator, so you would need to provide external 5V power, because the regulator on the Arduino Due can's supply enough current for an ESP8266.<br />

Angelo, have you considered including a 5V switching regulator on the RADDS, like the Duet does and the Smoothieboard has as an option?]]></description>

            <description><![CDATA[ RADDS actually has an expansion board that gives 2 extra stepper drivers (8 in total) and is pretty easy to make at home. I am not sure if it has any firmware support though.<br />
But yeah, it breaks my heart to see how RAMPS-FD project was abandoned and sold by geeetech as-is in kinda zombie-state.<br />
I had a friend who was about to buy geeetech ramps-fd only because it is the cheapest 32-bit board. My point is unless you've read this forum throughly you may be not aware that geeetech ramps-fd is total crap.<br />
If it would only work as intended. No offence to the original developers of ramps-fd though, I know it is totally not their fault, but geeetech being an ass capitalising on other peoples' beta designs.<br />
Getting it going again is a great thing. And firmware is practically there: RADDS uses the same Arduino DUE and has RepRapFirmware running stable, thanks to dcnewman. My guess would be you'll need to change pin assignments and set some stuff inverted (he-he).]]></description>

That's a bit like saying you want to run MSDOS and have no intention of trying Linux or Windows. Marlin was state-of-the-art once, but as is the way with most software, it's got stuck in a rut and is being replaced by better firmwares designed for modern hardware, such as RepRapFirmware and Smoothieware. Some day these will become obsolete too, but for now they are state-of-the-art.]]></description>

I can find them for sale but the problem with these boards from China is, you never know what you are going to get. No schematic and no certainty that you are getting the same board as everyone else has becuase designs often vary slightly from seller to seller with no explanation.<br />

I have had my eye on this topic for sometime, but haven't yet taken the plunge to get involved with this board yet, however it seems that 2 years have passed since bobc uploaded version 2.A to the git hub and still the board hasn't properly taken off. It seems a lot of work has been done to the software but the board is still not available. I put this down to the fact that the board is not easily avialable unless you buy a chinese clone which doesn't follow the design and changes are not made public (very frustrating indeed!).<br />

Is there much interest out there in having a few RAMP-FD V2 RevA boards produced which follow the design file on git hub and BOM, or are changes needed?<br />
<br />
If the current version is acceptable, I might order a batch and offer a good discount for people who pre-order (so I can get the size of order right first time). I sell a range of open source electronics on eBay in the UK and I always insist on quality of production, i.e. BOM parts sourced from reputable suppliers, good quality pcb etc. I intend to sell pcb, pcb fuse holders, pcb plus all surface mount soldered and fully assembled versions with different prices for each.<br />
<br />
Should also mention I will probably order the RAMPS-FD-EXT board as well, so please let me know if people are happy with the version on the git hub before I get them made. Unfortunately, I never learned Ki-CAD so I have no plans to modify the designs myself (unless very trivial to do so). I am happy to consider better choices for componenets if there are any mistakes in the choices found in the files on git hub?<br />
