I completed the build but never got round to commisioning it.I have found doing so now frought with problems.
There are so many contradictory peices of information in the years since then that have presented quite a few problems.
I have managed to work my way through but have been unable to get beyond the software setup.
The main reason for this is There appear to be no profile for the Mendal in the current software.
I thought I would download a Linux based torrent from the RepRap Project Activity site.(https://sourceforge.net/p/reprap/activity/?page=0&limit=100#607924e90f81f8b46970f68c)

My thinking was I had more chance of success running software via a live linux cd or dvd from the same year as my Mendel(2012)
I am assuming I had problems with windows and more recent software due to the age of my Reprap Mendal.
I found I was unable to download the torrent files due to the Bittorent tracker for them coming via the "piratebay.org" website.
This is due to it being "blocked" by a High court injunction many years ago.
Therfore i need to find another way of obtaining the torrents in question.
Alternative sites/sources or different trackers seem like the most realistic option.

Though one thing really pulls me down every time I print something bigger.

The heated bed has two very large wholes in it (see attached picture from the manual). I do not know why they are so large but I see reproducible warping when printing ASA over these areas. Now I want to have a new heated buildplate that is not held by 3 triangular skews but with 4 at the corners to achieve equal heat distribution. I will use an adapter plate to connect the three point mounting (keeping the good bed leveling properties of the three screws) to the new build plate above. I will loose some Z-hight here but my main problem is the warping not missing Z-hight.

Question: What heat mat can I use? In the spec I found that the power supply for the bed is 24V and 150 W. As I will anyway buy a new aluminum flat milled sheet, I can make it deep enough to fit an ender silicone heat mat (235x235mm) to it like this one:

It has 24V but 200W. If the power supply and the Gen6 deluxe board will only handle150W it should be also fine, right? Or will it not reach the 95°C that my current bed achieves?

I managed to get the marlin 1.1.8 running stable on my board thanks to some other guys here. Now I want to use the printer for vinyl cutting and it seems the software wants to use arcs. I once enabled arcs in Marlin, but the file was too big for the ATMEL ATMEGA 644P. So I thought about getting rid of the boot loader and use an Arduino nano as ISP programmer to transfer the marlin onto the gen 6 board.

1. Has anyone done this?

2. The Nano has also an ISP header. So a 1:1 connection to the gen6 deluxe board should work. Any hint on how to NOT twist the ISP cable with this 2x3 pins?

Do I power the gen6 board or should I set the ISP connection up win a way to transfer power from the PC via the Arduino nano into the gen6 board?

I adjusted the stepper motor currents yesterday and all seemed fine; no buzzing and all axes moving correctly. The only thing that has changed between then and this current state is the firmware. I attached both config headers. Hopefully someone out there can point me to some forgotten setting that causes this behavior.

My printer, a self build Mendel / i3 has been upgraded to abl using an inductive sensor and Marlin Bugfix 2.0.x. Z axis homes to zero just about 0.4 mm above bed as it should. However when it starts to print the nozzle tries to print at around 7.25mm above bed. The intended print seems to be sliced ok (Slic3r) and my Configuration.h has been 3rd party checked and I'm pretty sure that it's fine but I've attached it Just in case.

I have also attached my gcode for the model I am trying to print which is a set of 4 links for a cable drag chain. I have printed this successfully in the past but have recently sliced it from the .stl file in Slic3r as I did originally when previously printing it. Perhaps someone could try printing this as a test? I have the matching ends if anyone wants to print a drage chain for their machine - just ask and I'll gladly supply it..

I'd be grateful for any suggestions especially from anyone who has solved similar problems.

I managed to resolve my last problem but another one has raised it's ugly head.

My printer is set up with the correct nozzle offsets and when the printer homes the nozzle is just right, with the 'paper test' the paper is just snagged by the nozzle. However when I come to print, the nozzle tries to start printing at about 7.25 mm above the bed ( I used a stack of feeler gauges to get that figure).

The printer uses bilinear bed levelling on a 9 point matrix with an inductive probe over an aluminium bed.

The model was sliced in Slic3r with an 0.4 mm first layer and 0.3 mm for the following layers. The configuration of the machine was done with Marlin Bugfix 2.0.x which seems to be correct as far as I can tell. This is very frustrating and I really need help on this and would be very grateful for help / advice in solving it. I may have overlooked something in Marlin config so I attach it for perusal.

I built an i3 type RepRap quite a few years ago (around 2011) and it worked really well once I had the configuration.h sorted. I didn't use it then for a few years due to circumstances. It is a wooden framed one and inspired by the Makerfarm early model.

I came back to it a couple of years ago and tried to add bed levelling but had all sorts of problems with the buggy firmware at the time and despite great advice and help from the GitHub forum members I simply could not get it to work and just abandoned the idea and the machine. Inspired by some needs I decided, a couple of weeks ago to get the machine in working condition. I removed the inductive probe and re installed the Z axis microswitch Min_endstop and downloaded a copy of Marlin 1.1.9 intending to upgrade to 2 once I had it working.

I've had some success but mostlly frustration due the Z axis not functioning correctly. Using Pronterface it will rise by 10 mm exactly when instructed and then return down to the original position when the down instruction is sent via Pronterface. However if I issue two up instructions it will only accept one down instruction the net effect is that it is 10 mm higher - it is now almost at the top of it's travel. It will not accept any more 'down instructions' but as many 'up' insructions as I care to send.

When I query the endstops with M119 they all show open and all will trigger if I actuate them manually hence they are working as they should, i think!

My config.h file (heavily edited) is in the attachments in a Word docx file as I can see no way in the menu to add a software box.

It's a very old DIY model that I can't seem to find much info about anymore. I bought it back in 2012 or so, it being a total ripoff because the guy selling it to me had printed the parts in horrible quality and supplied a homemade hotend and a Sanguinololu board. Nothing worked, I hated the machine, the rods were made of MILD steel and the LM8UU bearings were rusty and 2nd hand. To top it off, most screws were missing and the ones that were in the package weren't all metric (HOW?!?).

Anyway, I managed to turn it into a somewhat functional machine and have printed at least 2 huge bags full of trash (and some useful prints, but nothing stellar).

After one year I had created a second printer, the MendelMax 1.5, with some minor changes, a vertically placed X-stage and a self-designed heatbed system with aluminium plates. This machine still works today without having to have it configured in four years. Not even after moving into my new home two years ago. The machine still works wonderfully but the quality of the plastic parts is currently rapidly decreasing. I see cracks forming and I really have to start replacing the plastic parts of the printer because I use it for work.

Currently I'm trying to get back into the latest techniques that I have access to in DIY 3D-printing. I am still doubting to get trapezoid rods for the Z-axis and a proximity-style bed leveling sensor.

My current plan for the Air 2 printer is as follows:
- Take the machine apart completely
- Clean the frame and mechanical parts
- Add 20x20 aluminium extrusions to the sides of the acrylic frame to make it sturdy for 3D-printing (the frame flexes left and right when the X-carriage moves around)
- Rebuild the base frame minus the X and Z axes and make sure it's squared
- Mount new hard chromed rods with new LM8UU bearings
- Convert from Sanguinololu to Ramps 1.4 with SD-support
- Print the new parts I want on the MendelMax 1.5 (including vertical X-axis)
- Mount a new bowden extruder with a 1.75mm hotend instead of the 3mm it has now (the MendelMax also works with 1.75mm)
- Add new pulleys and stepper motors with flat ends instead of round ends
- Convert the belts from T2 to GT2

The biggest obstacle I'm facing is that the OpenSCAD files that I used in the past for the MendelMax 1.5 parts do not work with the new version of OpenSCAD and I would really like to use the same kind of X and Z axes as I do on the MendelMax so that if one part breaks, I can still borrow it from the other printer. So I would have to figure out how to gain access to my old OpenSCAD files.

This post will mostly be a log of my progress with converting the printer to working condition with improvements/upgrades but I am very curious if anyone has ever had an Air2 and what they thought of it. Also curious how the Air2 can be improved on. The frame is terrible since the flex kind of makes it useless. I hope that adding the aluminium extrusions helps in fixating parts of the machine.

I bought a RepRapPro Tricolor Mendel v2 some years ago. I well used for 2 years until having issues with it. After that I bought an UM2 and then forgot my mendel while a certain time.

Today I'd like to do something with this machine. I have some vitamins in stock as screws and M8 stings. I'd like to get your experiences with this machine or similars in recycling or upgrading.

What do you think about ? What would be a good printer to rebuild with this old machine parts?

It should work, greased the screws they turn freely
When the motors are off.
All I can thing is one of em or both are dying

It's been a while since I've touched my Reprap Mendel (Same one as on the [reprap.org] page), and I am looking to finally get it up and running.

Last time I touched it I was having firmware problems (crashing into the frame in when homing, but ONLY during prints), and we ended up stripping the hot-end. So I am going to try again.

I've been reading around, and the market space has changed so much, that I am a bit lost now.

Can you guys recommend:
A) Which firmware is best with RAMPS1.4
B) Which software is best to go with (PC or Linux idc)
C) Which extruder/hot-end to use. (3mm)

For extruders I'd refer to avoid more stripping problems, so something all metal like the Flexion Extruder is preferable (I'm just not sure what is best). We were using a wades geared extruder, and I found that it flexed a lot, then slipped the filament.

When I was trying to print ABS I had a serious problem, the heat was softening my X carriage (it is actually severely bent), I was able to print another carriage apparently a superior model but I'm still afraid that it will happen again, I printed in ABS because I believe it will be more resistant to heat.
I think the problem is the proximity between the hot part and the car, but I have no idea how to solve.

Do you have any idea how I can get around this?

I am attaching images of the old car, the new car, the extruder and the current state of the installation.

Yesterday I was doing my first test with ABS, I was able to print, the piece has printed nicely in the second try.
When measuring, in X and Y sizes the value conferred very well, but in Z I had practically 1mm of difference for less, the piece should have 14.5mm but it was 13.5mm.
I checked again the movement of the Z (steps per mm), made a homming in Z, measured the distance (49mm), had the machine move 101mm up and measured again, measured 150mm with a margin of error very small, perhaps negligible.
This is normal or is something wrong? What do you think?

Were can I get the bits or even a complete kit? I can probably source most of the components easily enough it's the printed bits that are the biggest issue.

Hopefully I've posted this in the right place....
I would like some help / advice with modifying my 3D printer which I've had a bit of trouble with since owning it.

It's a Prusa i3 (wooden laser cut frame) with the standard PCB heat bed and stock hot end from eBay and I've owned it for about a year and a half.
It took months to configure it and get it printing how I wanted and then the first time I came to actually do more than a test print, the control board burned out!
The board that was supplied with the printer was a GT2560 (clone?) and it burned out at the fuse / fuse holder.

Up to that point, I had gone through an entire roll of PLA just setting it up, calibrating it and getting it to print just right and the first time I try to use it for more than calibration prints to do a long duration print (8 hours) it burned out about 2 hours in.... Needless to say I wasn't impressed and the manufacturers didn't want to know.

So, I decided to move to Ramps and upgrade the printer with a MK3 Aluminum heatbed along with some non electrical mods like brackets to firm up the frame and fix the printer to the bench and the anti-Z wobble mods.

I spent a day changing everything over, re-installing stuff and then finally I powered it up for a test print so I could start calibrating it all over again and guess what... Yup, the Ramps board started smoking after about 10 minutes of warming up and printing!

I verified the MK3 heatbed was wired correctly and the wires were soldered correctly to the heatbed and I metered the heatbed's resistance which read at 1.6 Ohms which I believe is within spec.

This was about 6 months ago and I've not touched the printer since.

Now I'm looking to rebuild it and get it back working so what I'm hoping to do is to split the printer's power demands between two power supplies.
I'm going to use the original 12V supply to power everything on the printer except the heated bed.

For the heated bed, I'm looking to purchase a 24V supply and a separate external MOSFET control board to take the heatbed load away from the Ramps board and hopefully that will stop all these burn outs.

What I'm not sure of is what amperage 24V supply to get. I want something with some "headroom" just in case.

If I can get it all working again, I'm tempted to go back to using the GT2560 because it worked well prior to the burn out and all my saved settings and calibrations are for the GT2560. I only went with Ramps as a last resort - not that there's anything wrong with Ramps.

Also if there are any improvements that might help in the future, I'd like to hear them please while I'm in the process of rebuilding / improving.

I have two identical Reprap Mono mandels and one of them needed to have the melzi board replaced (snagged the cable, USB port tore off) now I got these both from a friend so I never built them but I have had some experience with maintenance with them but I've never had to program anything.

I installed the new melzi board (a black V3) and it doesn't know what it doing (controls are backwards, very violent motion so i assume it doesn't know what its doing), I know I have to use the arduino program to write the firmware to the board and I'm following all instructions but I'm getting errors pop up that I can't understand

I've measured the carriage and bed movement, if I tell it 100mm it moves 100mm, and if I tell it to go back 100mm it goes back to the exact same place (measured).

The issue I'm having is that I can print a calibration cube. Say a 20mm x 20mm and it comes out to 19.8mm x 19.8mm
Which I'm thinking is probably that the carriages don't move exactly 20 mm, or measuring error, or material shrink
I can adjust for that

But the problem is, that if I print anything real
Say for example a part that has a measurement that is 17mm, it comes out oversized at 17.45mm
