If you're looking at getting your first machine, then I would advise you to consider a kit, such as the ones sold by RepRapPro (yes I am biased ;) )

On the weekend 29th & 30th of september we had a build competition at the Sheffield RepRap User Group.

This was in conjunction with the University of Sheffields Festival of the Mind event and was hosted by the Gist Hub.

5 Teams competed to build a Mendel 90 each and print a wining entry that embodied the Craft and Magic of 3D printing. The winning team got to take away the Golden Spanner Trophy.

Links to photos of the day can be found here :-
The weekend was a huge success and more importantly was great fun for all who took part. I would like to say a big thankyou to everyone that made the event what it was:-

Nophead for the Mendel90, design, kits and expert supervision.
Have a look at the main rep-rap site for an email or PM him see what he has got on. The other guy to try is Jean Marc Giacallone. He has done more in conjunction with Adrian of late and often runs build weekends etc.

My personal thanks to everyone that took part, from the Gist Lab, group members, curious visitors, Sheffield Hallam University, Adrian (Of course) and everyone who came from the most distant corners of our country.

A special thanks to people who brought their machines (Nophead, eMakershop, Oliver) for all to see and were very patient in explaining what, why and how the whole process goes together.

We were stunned at the distance some of the visitors had traveled to meet up with like minded makers and to meet Adrian.

We're celebrating the creation of the Sheffield RepRap Makers' first machine with a special visit from Adrian Bowyer, the inventor of the paradigm-shifting RepRap, in an extended two-part season finale of the Self-Replicating Machine Odyssey.*

* 2pm - 4pm: Meet the Machines Hands-on session with some of the RepRaps spawning in the Sheffield Makers community. A chance to see first-hand how the machines work and what you can do with them.
* 6pm- 7.30pm: Meet the Maker Join Adrian Bowyer for a special guest talk ("Manufacturing for the Masses)" on the development of the self-replicating rapid prototyper, its history and future possibilities.

Adrian and local RepRap Makers will be around for both sessions. The GIST Lab will be open from 2pm through to 9pm, with a chance for informal Q&A and project demos outside of the above scheduled sessions. You should come if you're interested in sustainability, engineering, products, design, open source, hardware hacking, robotics, or the invisible gap between physical and digital that makes up the thingiverse.
Venue: The GIST Lab
Address: First Floor, The Workstation, 1 Grinders Hill / Brown Street, Sheffield, United Kingdom, S1 2BX

This month is the inaugural meet-up to help the group find its feet and shape the way it goes forward. It's a loose agenda, and an informal set-up.

Everyone Welcome
No experience necessary. Let's face it, this is the future we're building!

Interested in experimentation and building machinery that can self replicate?

In a nut shell RepRap is an open research project to make Rapid Prototyping Machinery that can Replicate it self ultimately completely but working towards is acceptable, hence RepRap. This event is a meet-up for folks who want to find out more or get involved, and to work on projects that push forward the boundaries of this technology research.

It's not dry research though .... we build stuff too. And that stuff will eventually be able to build itself ... welcome to the self-replicating machine odyssey!
Fore details and a map see :-

Thanks sebastien.

OK I am looking to pull together a first meeting in the next month and hopefully have at least one a month regularly thereafter.

Venue as yet undecided although I am in conversation with a possible local group. Will feedback more as I know More.

Failing that it will be a pub do, most likely either a wednesday or thursday evening 19:00 till 21:00, then to a pub if not already in one.

Hopefully I will also get to customise the WIKI page a touch over the next couple of days.

Cheers
