CoreXZ

I am still in the process of cleaning up all my files so that I can publish my design but I thought I would share. (The files will eventually be here.) It is proving to be a rock solid printer for me. It uses the CoreXY geometry in the XZ plane with a little twist. It gets me 3X the resolution in the Z direction.

I have printed as fast as 200mm/s. I get great surface quality at 90mm/s.

I use 100lb test braided fishing line. 24 625VV bearing/pulleys. 3 spools.

Guitar tuners are used to tension the system and to adjust the tilt of the gantry.

The firmware has been written and tested.

222x200x222mm print volume

After using Mendel style bots and using this, I would highly recommend this one. No more screw artifacts. The gantry can't get accidentally tilted. One less stepper. Two steppers push the effector back and forth but are mounted on the frame. You can move fast in the Z direction allowing for non-planar printing. Moving the printer during a print causes no artifacts. (Even flipping it upside down.)

I will probably design an all printed version at some point but the laser cut frame is very cheap.

The biggest negative of this printer is the resonance that happens when you turn corners due to all the stretch in the string. This could be solved with higher test string. For me, the problem is only cosmetic at higher speeds so I have no motivation to fix it.

Hi all,

I have a problem with the Core XZ on my Smoothieboard.

I used JNJ's method for connecting the motors as per below..

# arm_solution corexz # selects the corexz solution

# x_reduction 1.0 # standard CoreXZ has no reduction on x axis
# z_reduction 3.0 # standard CoreXZ has 3X reduction on z axis
# alpha_steps_per_mm 55 # xz motor 1
# beta_steps_per_mm 55 # xz motor 2
# gamma_steps_per_mm 110 # y axis motor

It all moves fine EXCEPT when I home the Y axis ... this makes the Z move..
I think this is because your alpha and beta motors become the X and Z axis.. hence the smoothie does not recognise the true Y axis?

Is it easy ( or how can I do it ) to make the xz motors the actual XZ motors on the smoothie?

Or do you have another solution for homing maybe?

If you can draw a sketch similar to the one for XZ axis in page 1, it will be a great help

I am using RAMPS and Nicolas' version of Marlin. I might be making a wrong assumption about his code (and probably asking the wrong question). I am guessing he modified the CoreXY code for his CoreXZ implementation, and needed to somehow modify the X and/or Z minimum endstopping routines. Since leveling on the RAMPS depends on the Z-endstop, and both X and Z motors have to stop, I can see how that would require different considerations than a Core XY machine. I've not yet dug into the code very far (I've only grepped for COREXZ to find the files involved), and it might be more obvious once I do. But if not, or if I can't get it working, I might break down and buy a duet or a smoothieboard for my printer.

Should be no problem. When running my fork of RepRapFirmware in CoreXY/CoreXZ/CoreYZ mode on the Duet, when any homing switch is triggered during a homing move then all motors are stopped. This has implications if you want to set up the homing files to do simultaneous X and Y homing, as I describe at [reprap.org].

On another side-note, does either the Smoothie or Duet code mentioned above take auto-leveling and/or endstops into account?

The Duet code supports 3, 4 and 5-point bed compensation. I don't know exactly what you mean by "taking endstops into account". The Duet code gives you a choice of a maximum or a minimum homing switch for each axis, or you can use the Z probe in lieu of a low end switch where that is practical (e.g. Ormerod printers use a switch to home the Y axis and the IR proximity sensor to home X and Z). Once homed, the printer will refuse to exceed the high and low axis limits specified by then M208 commands in the configuration file, unless you choose to override this protection deliberately.
