Testing axis control w/o extruder/heat?

While I'm waiting on a few misc parts, I wanted to test the full range of movement on all axis to make sure there isn't anything binding. I had originally upladed the marlin firmware, but any frontends complain about not having a temp reading (which is legit). I then tried one of the "test" code samples, which seem to just rotate the motors each direction in a loop. This worked, although I found that the belted units weren't very smooth. What I'd like to do is be able to watch the full range of motion, and ideally control it.

Any ideas?
