        <description>Hello, I just have finished to build my new MendelMax 2 printer. And now it would be nice to make it run.
It has a RAMPS V1.4 board and my computer is a Mac with the new OS &quot;EL Capitan&quot;.
I have already downloaded a very nice firmware named &quot;Mattercontrol&quot;, but despite my efforts my Mac does not recognize the card and the connection is not made.
Does anyone know how solve this problem?

But these motors are connected in paralelle, so that they naturally have the same input voltage.<br />

With the trimpot normally anti clockwises turns down the voltage and clockwise turns up the voltage, a good trimpot will have about 270 - 310 degrees of movement and physical stops to stop movement. Cheap ones will not and can turn right around..  do not spin them around and around, its pointless and can damage them.  <br />
<br />
You need to put the probes as pictured.  (One probe on the trimpot, the other on negative.)<br />
NB you do not need 12v on while doing this, is best if its off. That way you cant accidentally short 12v to anywhere its shouldn’t be.<br />
Just power the mega from the usb plug.  and Leave the ramps un powered.<br />

Thanks for the great summary!  I am also new to this, and I was hoping you could help me with an additional question.  My Z axis has 2 stepper motors (both 0.4A) controlled by the same driver.  According the formula you are using, the Vref for a single 0.4A motor should be:<br />

Since there are 2 motors on the same driver should I double the Vref?<br />

You need to get the basic calibration of X,Y,Z &amp; E ( extruder) 100% perfect before you even start to think about improving print quality.<br />
<br />
The good thing is when you're done you shouldn't have to touch them again ( unless of course you change something major on the machine)<br />
<br />
Each machine is different and many types &amp; brands of filament have different properties. The only way to find what works best on your machine is to experiment.<br />
The best way to do that is pick a simple calibration model ( something like a 20mm cube) and stay with it. SO when you do something different or get a different<br />
brand of filament you can compare and start to get a feel for what works best on your machine.<br />
Some people have different models to test different things like speed , flow layer height &amp; temperature.<br />
<br />
This is definitely a hobby where the more time and patience you put in the better results you get out!   <br />
<br />
a lot of people seem to focus on speed and that often brings problems with it. Would you rather have a 4 hour print that prints reliably every time or a 2 hour print that<br />
looks bad and doesn't always work so you have to redo it!. Think about it.!!<br />

in my case the nozzle is wrapped in a silicone insulation refractory to high temperatures.<br />
I add that I use a black color filament, that had previously overflowed on the top of the nozzle.<br />
As you have shown, I have set now a fan shroud that cools only the channel and not the nozzle.<br />
<br />
Thanks to you, my printer can work since before yesterday.<br />
It remains only a problem of esthetic:<br />
I feel, that the successive layers are too visible.<br />
But I must confess, that I still have not corrected the number of steps by mm of filament extruded in the config.h.<br />

I have solved my problème yesterday by observing that the filament was not guided well.<br />
The filament was skidding on the ball bearing during the extrusion.<br />
So, I have added a second bearing and now since the filament stops skidding between the two bearings, which act as a real pulley.<br />
The machine has just stopped after a work of 8 hours long.<br />

The fan arrangement isnt the best it could be thats for sure and i think this is where your problems is.<br />
<br />
To be clear <br />
You need a fan on the cool fins ( only the cool fins) to stop heat traveling up and making the filament soft before it reaches the hot end. Permanently on all the time <br />
You can use a fan to keep the work piece cool. This fan is connected to the ramps and its speed can be controlled by the software. <br />
It is much better if this fan has a duct so it only blows on the work piece and not the hotend at all. Otherwise the hotend and ramps are constantly heating to try and keep the hotend up to temprature while the fan is blowing it cold<br />
Doesnt make sense right !!!<br />
<br />
So the important one is the permanent one to cool the cool fins. It is better and more efficient if this has a duct so it blows only the cool fins <br />

I know it can be very frustrating when it jams but be patient. Remember there are 1000's of home printers that work fine and yours will as well if you are patient !!! <br />

You are under extruding 6% but i don't think that would make your filament jam in the hot end.<br />
<br />
But while we are at it maybe you should adjust it.  ( im assuming you know how to edit the config file and upload to your board ) <br />
<br />
So when you input 100 you get 96 mm. SO you divide 100 by 96 which = 1.04166<br />
<br />
Your current e steps are 939 so you multiple 939 by 1.04166  which =  978.1<br />
SO where it says 160,160,3200,939   you change the 939 to 978.1 <br />
Then save the file and upload it to your ramps board.<br />
Then you test again to make sure when you input 100 mm it actually puts in 100 mm.<br />

            <description><![CDATA[ The hot end cool fins have to have a fan permanently on. Even after printing you should leave it on for 5 to 10 mins while the hotend cools down !!!<br />

ABS can be very tricky to get to stick . Thats why most slicer software has options to use a brim and/or a raft.  <br />
ABS can warp when printing so i dont think you can print without a heated bed im afraid. <br />
E3D sells some filament called Polymax that prints like PLA but has similar properties to ABS but even that needs a heated bed.<br />
<br />
SO i guess the easiest and best way forward is to be patient and order a replacement heated bed and save yourself a lot of wasted filament and frustration.<br />

I think I will have to replace also the thyristor of the bed heating, which has completely burn.<br />
It has become completely black and has partially made melt the bleu screw connector in front of it. The consequence has been that it behaves now as a closed switch.<br />
That helps me in some way, because I use now that connection to make run a little fan permanently.<br />
I must tell you about an issue that I didn't tell you before:<br />
When I ran my first piece, I saw suddenly that the PLA wire stopped to progress.<br />
It seemed to get stuck in the extruder channel. After a lot of disassemblies/reassemblies, I noticed that the radiator of the channel was very hot.<br />
The PLA was melting in the chanel, that is to say far away before to enter the nozzle of the extruder.<br />
That is the raison of the little fan that I have placed very close to the extruder channel.<br />
Now the channel remains cold and the PLA melt in the right place.<br />

Before heated beds were readily available we printed PLA onto standard none heated beds. That of course had some issues with the printed part not sticking to the bed or in some cases sticking too well.<br />

And the temperature has exceeded the setpoint of 60 ° C up to 68 ° C.<br />
I stopped everything, but I have observed that a thyristor was blackened and he burned the insulation of a wire that touched it.<br />
