Dual Spiral Lightbulb / Week of June 09, 2012 Initially I chose the half-size Spiral Lightbulb for this week's print. When printed at half-size the print was more of a test of physics rather than a test of a reprap style printer. The pressure from a thread being extruded was enough to compress the tendrils. I modified the print to include a second spiral in the opposite direction to add structural support and I also removed the base. http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:24646 As typical for my first print of an model I printed this at 20mm/s and at 0.33mm layers and 0.65 thread width. I intended to turn the 40mm overhead fan on after the first layer but forgot until more than half way up the print. Estimated print time was 35 minutes and actual time was 50 minutes. Min layer time was 10s. For judging this contest I am looking for quality vs actual print time. I read the news on my iPhone, just as I was about to fall asleep ... and now I'm wide awake again, thinking about what to set as next week's competition.

I've had a good day today, with the Apparently Impossible Cube reaching the top spot (briefly) in Popular Things on Thingiverse and a new invention of mine finally seeing the light of day. I haven't published the design yet but as a little teaser, I can tell you that it's a very useful little item that takes just 20 cm of 1.75 mm filament to print.

I did think about using this for next week's challenge, to see who could come up with the most interesting print using the least amount of plastic but abandoned this idea for two good reasons. Firstly, this isn't really supposed to be a design competition, and secondly, with the different combinations of filament size and nozzle diameter it could end up being a mathematical nightmare to judge (and I haven't seen nophead on here yet).

So, in conclusion, look out for a new thread in the morning when I'll set out the next challenge.

If the competition was judged solely on quality I think rhysjones would win it with a very clean print. The print was at 0.2mm layers with a build time of 70m.

When I factor in print time I think these are the three standouts.

richrap with 0.2mm layers in 39m30s
benosteen with 0.3mm layers in 36m19s
richgain with 0.3mm layers in 34m30s

richrap's print is very fast for 0.2mm layers, but I think the 0.3mm prints were actually a little bit better quality in less build time.

benosteen added a bunch of extra content that I though was useful and in the spirit of the competition. I really wanted to award extra points for that, but I didn't spell that out at the beginning.

It was sliced in Slic3r 0.8.2 and printed on a Prusa Mendel. 1.75ish PLA.

First few layers at 190 dropping to 182. I struggled to cool it as it printed due to the cooling robbing heat from hot end. I've since insulated my hot-end a bit better and am reprinting.

I took a moment this evening to examine KISSlicer a bit more closely and am currently reprinting the Lightbulb using KISSlicer to generate the gcode. If it doesn't fall over I'll post the result also!

Great fun! Challenging print.

Not too bad for a first attempt, just a little stringing which cleaned up nicely.
Completed in 34:30 on my eMaker Huxley.
1.75mm ABS filament
0.3 mm layers from a 0.5 nozzle, automatic extrusion width.
Print speed: loops 30, small loops 24, infill 30, other 24.
1.8mm retraction at 30 mm/s
2 perimeters, 2 solid layers, 0.3 fill density.
Printed at 210 C.
Cooling with side mounted fan @ 60% after first 10 layers.

There are two fans. The one in the front that cools the cold end, but some air does make it down to the part. The second fan sits right behind the heater block and points down. It's visible in the video. Both fans are 40mm.

This model is heavily influenced by min layer time. Increasing speeds is not going to significantly effect the build time because min layer time will just slow it back down.

Printed in 36 minutes and wasn't too bad! Some of the ambitious overhangs
curled a bit and the head caught some of them causing a good proportion
of the stringing.

Any tips or hints to help reduce the bobbling on the overhang sections would be appreciated!



The bridging at the top was a bit ropey too but managed to complete. It
struggled potentially because of the thick 0.3mm layering.

It is printed at 0.15mm layer height with our miniextruder.
Temperatures of 174ºC at the first layer and 170 at the rest for the extruder.
Temperatures of 60ºC at the hot bed during all the print time.
It was printed in an actual time of 1h 38m.

Must say, I'm very impressed by your little machine! You are getting very precise Z control with belt drives, and it's print quality is superb.

I've taken a look at KISSlicer but all those settings and slightly different terminology just frightened me off for now. I'll push on with Slic3r for the moment.

In my opinion, the biggest drawback to the up is the closed-source software. It's a great little machine, but the company has it's own view of how things should be done, and that includes not allowing people to disable supports. However, that being said, the supports were pretty easy to remove using a pair of needle-nose pliers.

On my old Rep-Rap I printed the original spiral lightbulb out without supports no problem. I need to pick up some calipers to check the filament width too, in case it's wider than I think leading to the gcode extruding just slightly too much.
