Aluminium bed on Ormerod 2

Has anyone managed to fit DaveK's / DC42s aluminium bed to the Ormerod 2? I have a 5mm aluminium plate, just wondering if its worth the trouble cutting the shape out. Thanks!

As I said, anything is pretty much possible, the main limiting factor is that i have to order a certain amount of metal so making just one of anything can be expensive but if we get some interest going then these parts are pretty easy :)

Thanks again,

6mm is fine - gives a little more meat for little weight change, the holes would not move by my changing the thickness anyway.

At a rough guesstimate, If i were to do these, I would have to make more than one set or else the price would be simply too high.

I would therefore propose an estimate of £65 for a kit of the three parts including screws for assembly.

Hello Dave,

I think 5mm would also be okay for the bed. For the other two parts I am a little bit unsure. You would have to be aware that the holes could move by 0.5mm.
The outer diamater of a LM12UU is 21mm, that's right.
I only demanded for a roughly price so that I can see and compare.

Thanks Treito,

Questions -

They are made in 6mm thickness - is this needed if made from aluminium or would be better dropped to 5mm?

Is there likely to be any demand for these parts if i made the whole set as a kit with screws etc?

What is the correct dimension of the linear bearing - drawing has it as 20.9mm but that might be to make it a tight fit, my guess is 21mm - tight fits are different for metal parts ;)

Thanks

Many thanks for the answer.
For the moment it is only theoretically, but it fits to the thread, so no stress. I printed a Y-carriage with a complete different design and a bed support consisting of three parts. However the first print was done with PLA because ABS warped. I didn't think about the screws that they may transfer heat as well so the bed support melted.
I reprinted now the bed support in ABS, but I am afraid it will melt again, but the printer is not ready yet. My printed y-carriage should be fully compatible with the original bed support so probably the top plate would be enough. That's the price if you do not buy a kit. :D

One stupid question according to this theme,
take a look here: [reprappro.com]
What would be the costs for the bed support and optional for the y-carriage?
Would it make a difference if the outer lines would be more straight?
I hope I got the right files:

Okay thanks Dave. That was only a theoretical question but I think this is interesting for many others.
The German producers do the process mostly automatically. So they demand a DXF-File which can be processed automatically. These procedure only allows a two-dimensional drawing. So you have to upload the DXF-file and select the material and thickness and you will get an automatically offer. Step-files are not accepted only if they provide a bended part.
I will need several parts in some months and I will definitely ask you for a price, but at the moment I have several problems which needs to be solved first.
Is there no problem with the shape?
The original bed has an individual shape which looks very nice instead of a simply triangle. This would probably be nicer to cut and therefore cheaper I guess.

The Aluminium bed support by DaveK does not directly fit onto the Y-carriage. If you have the original one you will have to add rectangular cutouts.
Which parts need to be redesigned? I found this one from Joar107 that looks interesting. No need for a y+brace, the clamps look like they screw directly into the bed: [forums.reprap.org]

I'm having a closer look at the alternative aluminium parts with an eye for hand cutting them. I think some parts on the XPlate in particular can be eliminated to make cutting simpler (for example, the ridges above the motor and the little hole at the tip). I don't have easy access to a laser or water jet cutter, so my trusty hacksaw or jigsaw will have to do :)

I am considering to put an Aluminium plate onto my Ormerod 2, but it will be necessary to change the design of it. Maybe if you print the one piece y-carriage or bed-support by lefty(?) or my one you could add some holes to fix it.

Has anyone managed to fit DaveK's / DC42s aluminium bed to the Ormerod 2? I have a 5mm aluminium plate, just wondering if its worth the trouble cutting the shape out. Thanks!
