Smartrap - Cimbria - Wood frame project.

Smartrap Cimbria Project!
( Made a complete redesign of the first page now when I have tinkercad to make my mockups with.
I wanted a cleaner page design. )
Please post pictures if you use my remix as I would love to see them and keeps me motivated to do more work on it.
I will not upload my remix to thingiverse until iam satisfied and it have bin tested!!!!!!
Iam sorry if I might upload wrong files or do any other error as you can see me like a nutty professor that have so many ideas that I even forget where I placed my underwear sometimes :)
To many things on my mind most of the time.

I do also highly recommend Tinkercad to model with as I dumped sketchup in the trashcan after testing it.
https://tinkercad.com/
I use chrome to edit with and works great.

And Here comes my playhouse of mockup models and trials :)
Here is wath I want with the cimbria remix of smartrap.

Keep in mind that you may have to scroll to my latest posts in this thread to get the latest files. (You don't seam to be able to edit the first post after awhile.)
When I make larger updates so will I compress the files to a bundle with them so each time always have the latest ones.

Here is a early preview of my printed case concept.

This is how it looks.

The plate can also be printed and seam to hold up pretty well with the right settings.
4-6 perimeters.
3-4 bottom and top layers.
My mockups have infill density of 1 and bend slightly and I think it neads to be at least 2-3 to be stable?
Its more or less that you nead to experiment with your printer wath settings seam to work at its best.
And if you print it keep in mind that its awfull to get loose from the bed ;)

This is the corner piece to be used to attach legs and plate together.

Here comes also some of the thingiverse files iam using as I will update on things that exist that I will use for this build!
I found this one extremely usefull as it only uses a single screw to attch to the plate and could even be made so it can move a bit if the rods aint eaxactly straight and still print good.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The design goals of the remix.
Simplier assembly.
You can use almost any extruder that is supposed to be mounted directly on a nema 17 motor.
You can cut the large parts in various materials like aluminium, wood and plastic etc.
The design will always attempt to also be printable for the ones that like that.
The design will use stl files that have bin tested and works from thingiverse.

Remix backstory!
Iam unemployed and have a lot of spare time and little money.
So I want to build a smartrap but don't have the funds.
I have a lot of time and the free version of Tinkercad and a finished prusa i3 wood frame printer.

So wath could I do with this combination ?

Use my wacked up mind and think about a even simplier and cheaper construction of the smartrap :)
I have followed the smartrap community for a while now and will try to add the improvements I have read about like gt belts instead of fishing lines for the ones that want that and also the classic design.
I will start this rework from the bottom and work my way up as I live in an apartement and don't have a workshop :)
This mean that all my modifications will work with the original files from smartfriendz the whole way thru.

And you wonder why do something like this???
This simple plate removes the nead for multiple parts and cut down construction time and things that could go wrong.

They are instead replaced by the plate and 2 legs in wood or another material, and the other parts with a lot smaller printed parts to speed up construction.

And I do have a history with love to retro games and tinkering with technology as you can see on my tube page.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If anyone wants to pitch in so go ahead as I want the smartrap to be even cheaper and better as I simply love to tinkeraround with things.

Whas it yours I ordered thru ebay :)
Iam going to finish the build assembly videos and then look in to using yours or some type of similar extruder ;)
Iam already getting a lot of questions on motor types etc on my printer when building so have to go thru the mail bag with that also :)
Iam currently very tired as my temporary work is a lot of overtime but great money for my builds :)

No, I don't sell through ebay, I only sell direct through my website or by emails.
If anyone wants something they can email or PM me or go to the website.
I stopped using FEEbay when they introduced some very high fees for sellers here in Australia, haven;t used it for years now.
Anyway, your parcel is on its way to you, hotend, nozzles and some extra goodies.

Cheers,

I also see that you x carriage mount seam to use the nema 17 screw spacing are I right ????
iam intrested in testing it but I have no knowledge of making hobbed bolts :(

You use 2.5 a nema 17 motors that are 42 mm long on these extruders ??

I use a much lower amperage motor and it can lift 4Kg without any problem. The gearing takes care of the power.
If you want good motors cheap and want quantity, try this guy, he has been very helpful to me.

The motor I have been using for everything, all axis and extruders is LDO-42STH38-1684A
I have had 100% non failure rate with these motors, unlike some others that I have had as much as 5% failure rate.
As you have ordered a hotend,I will include a hobbed bolt for you as well for free.
The files for the extruder you can download from my website or I will send you an updated version that I am using now.

Thanks regpy :)
There will be a lot of enhancements as soon as I finish up everything for the first release.
This is the first prototype release of a working version.

Iam keen to make a Bowden setup with the extruder mounted where the filament spool is now so the weight is even less on the arm.
The current version is to make it as easy to operate as possible.

Some ideas that might help.
I designed a Wades style extruder for Bowden use when I was developing the SmartRap machines.
This extruder has become the one I now use for all my machines because I find it so reliable.
The files are available on my website for free download, and it shouldn't be too difficult for you to design a base to suit your build.

here are a few photos of that extruder setup on some of my machines.

I see, that's what made me wonder, thanks for clearing that up. FreeCAD is for now the only CAD program that actually works for me, i've tried several ... I'm running 100% on Debian based OSes since Windows pissed me off one time to many and i swore never to go back to it ever again, although that has put me back into the media dark ages for a couple of years..
Now Gimp, Inkscape, and FreeCAD are a relief to me.

But is there a way to convert SAT to anything that FreeCAD can understand while keeping the design parts? Or is it best to forget that and just use the STL files and work my way back from there if i need to make changes? I'd like to have more insight how the designs are put together, i learn a lot from looking around in other peoples designs.

Sorry for a dumb question but wath is a sat file ? :)
Here is the first motor tests and now do I only nead a glas plate and some small bits for the hotend to have the first prototype done.

I also had to help my friend that bought a smartrap to get all axis working right and finetuning his unit.

Serge I think you nead to update and sort the build guide some more as he managed to mix x/y axis by following the guide?
When I clicked on the x carriage section so did it go to the middle of the y carriage section etc.
I personally would not like to have all that weight of the extruder on those X axis LM8UU bearings, though printrbot also does this so it should not be an issue.
The Y axis looks nice and light. the GT2 belts are they horizontal? Looks like they are a bit on an angle. (can be an optical illusion)

YES! That looks solid.
I see that you did the same as I did and turned the rods over 90 degrees.
I like the way you have done the X belting too - clever.
Y looks good too, moving carriage instead of moving rods.
Well done.

EDIT:
I just noticed that you are using a direct drive extruder, similar to the QU-BD model.
I was using that before going to the Wades style and made some modifications to that one. I printed them out of PLA and they worked fine, no issues with heat.
If anyone wants the STL file for that I can find it and post it.
It uses a grub screw for the adjustment, the end of the grub screw needs to be polished.
Only drawback I found with this extruder was that you need to ne a bit patient to get the pressure right, once right it works fine.
I actually started to tear down my prototype to see where I got it wrong with the simple assembly?
It looked simple for me but a person that are a completely new to 3d printers remarked that it looked complicated to assemble.
I have a better design now that is even simplier but how it looks in the end is another question ?

Yes to if I have seen all cool new stuff that are printable in the smartrap sections ;)
Iam only hanging around the smartrap section due to time shortage now days.
I have got employement for 3 months and start very early nowdays.
I will post a image soon or even a video.

Thanks!

Quote
markstephen
If you want to stick with a rod, and the axis is moving free enough, you could always try a ThreadlessBallscrew.

Yes i've seen those ballscrews, though Cliff is trying to make a 'wooden+hardwarestore sourced' smartrap. It's about time every city has a little Shanghai shop next to the hardware store. :)
I wonder if it's possible to make all wooden slides (XY and Z) Although that probably will then no longer fit in the smartrap philosophy (or does it?). And I'm also thinking about using the smooth glass as a slide itself, but then it's more difficult to attach a heated bed.
Ideally Serges idea to make an all printed smartrap that can print all of itself is exelent. Though in my case i found out that the other challenge, to build a printer without having access to a printer is still a bit of a pain. (but very educational)
And ... now I wonder if there are Japanese wood specialists here on the forum.

How about if you added a second piece of glass for the slide are that is very narrow. That way you could still have the glass for the bed, a heater pad (or whatever) and the second thin strip of glass as the slide area (maybe glue it in place with silicone adhesive?? or even clip it in place (food for thought??))
And for the driving mechanism, how about the threadless ball screw idea that can be printed? [www.thingiverse.com]
