I live in the Peterborough area, and was hoping I could find someone (or many somebodies) with a machine that could help to educate me. I've done some reading, and am hoping to pick up Prusa's book when it comes out, but up close and personal visuals / hands on is the best way to learn. Not sure how far I'd be willing to drive to see it, but as I get closer to being able to afford it (6 mo - 1 year) I'm sure I'll drive farther. I'm in Bowmanville / Oshawa / Whitby fairly often so that wouldn't be a big deal right now.

I see vast potential in this as my dad is an RC hobbyist (Planes Boats AND Autos), I know others that like to work with models, and I'm a nerd looking for a decent hobby.

Thanks for any willing victims!

I've got everything wired up, just trying to test my stepper motors and running into problems. (Prusa Mendel i2)

I'm powering RAMPS via USB - only have the X Axis Stepper Motor connected and can successfully send
the Sprinter firmware, and I can see COM4 in Pronterface - it's connected but when I try and "move" the X Axis
a little to test - nothing happens.

I've made sure the wiring is correct - Red/Blue/Green/Black and my Molex connector is ok.

Now mind you I don't have anything else connected to my RAMPS board. I read somewhere
that the firmware might be expecting all the endstops wired up - is that true? is that why
the stepper motor isn't turning?

Thoughts...suggestions?

Thanks in advance everyone....new to building (but once I get this sorted I'll be rocking)

I think I've decided on getting the Prusa i3 as my first printer (though I've used A Stratysys many times), but I have no idea where to buy one near the GTA (or in Canada). The reason I'm looking for one around these parts is specifically so I don't get murdered with shipping charges / customs caused by shipping internationally. The only place I've found that would do so is Mixshop, but I haven't seen anyone vouch for the quality of their i3.

Would I be better off just custom building one? Or does anyone know of a store, whether online or in person, that I can buy one?

Hey Guys,
So I recently had a room mate move in with me and now my printer has been relocated to my room. This wouldn't be a problem if I ran it from a laptop but as of now I have to use my desktop. So I was thinking of adding a display that would allow me to print without the computer. So i was wondering if you guys would let me know what you have used, what you have heard for the best display to use. I am currently running a Prusa i2- ecksbot from eckertech and installed is the Ramps V 1.4. As far as I know it should have no issues running a display. Please let me know what you would use or what you are using. Any ideas as to the best suppliers would be nice too.. thanks

Hey folks,
I am a high school manufacturing teacher looking to build a prussa mendel I2 with a design tech class I am teaching in the fall. I am looking to source the printables for this project. If someone is willing to do a set for us, send me a pm. I live in Brantford, so closer (within reason) is better. I am happy to pay for your services or offer some custom machining if you need something done. Thanks in advance for your reply.

Building a Mendel, where to find good quality hardware? (8 replies)

Hello all,

I've been gathering bits and pieces for some time now, and reading tons of information leading to paralysis by analysis. So I've decided that my build will be a Mendel because I will eventually want to upgrade to a RepRapPro Mendel. Not only do I like the idea of multi-colour printing, but am hoping that soluable support printing may eventually become a more viable solution.

So far I have either bought or ordered:

Stepper Motors
Arduino 2650 + Ramps 1.4
3 GT2 pulleys and belts
PCB Heated print bed
Mechanical and hall end stops
Nifty little LCD display/controller
Old computer power supply

Now I need the hardware and hot end. I've pretty much decided on the Ultibot .35mm hot end kit. Now I need to find a good source for quality threaded rods and smooth rods. I've heard "mixed" reviews about Mixshop.ca and when I asked them a question regarding the availability of one of their products I received no response, so I've kind of ruled them out.

I've checked out Eckertech, but they advertise their threaded and smooth rods as being for their Eckerbot specifically. I haven't gone through to see if all of their threaded and smooth rods come in the sizes and quantities that I need.

Am I overlooking an obvious source in the GTA for these parts? I know I can get nuts and bolts anywhere, but since the threaded rods and smooth rods need to be absolutely straight, I'm not so certain where to get these bits with the kind of tolerances I'd need. I've checked metal supermarkets but they don't appear to have metric sizes.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sean

EDIT: I just ordered the hot end and glass from Voxel Factory

Has anyone noticed with the new slic3r how it is making an extra layer around the print at the bottom? I would love to know how to get rid of it...it is quite annoying and causing a couple issues especially when printing parts that mate together. ie gears or components.

Wondering if there is any mutual deal that can be worked out for parts to build my first (prusa) 3d printer. I typicaly sell these laptops for $250 each.
(for price comparison sake)

I'm open to offers, suggestions, and of course your outright prices on parts :)

Hello all! New to the forum and 3d printers in general. I actually saw an iphone lego case that was 3d printed and the world of 3d printing opened up to me.

In making my decision to build one.. my question is is there a quick comparison of features and pro' con's of each diy 3d printer?

I'm a little concerned about limitations on printable size, for example 8" x 8" I believe the prusa supports.

Which printers would allow for larger objects to be modeled, or would you need to split yoru objects in smaller sub-sections?

thx!

would appreciate any local vendors (barrie area) and anyone selling partds as well.
