I have to work on this important presentation which in this coming week. And I am searching out for ways to elaborate my model of the project I am working on in a better way. Someone recommended me to look for the 3d architectural renders for my presentation as it will elucidate the working and procedure of the equipment with more clarity.

One of the biggest challenges with 3D-drawings is internal surfaces unintentionally formed that cause slicing not to work properly. This is using SketchUp Pro, slicing with Slic3r, and printing with a Reprap X400. Eliminating lines unnecessary to form the outside surfaces helps, but this may not eliminate all the internal surfaces which can be hard to see even with an x-ray view. It often takes deleting an external surface, looking for internal surfaces to select and delete, then adding the external surface back, being careful not to use a line that also adds the internal surface back.

This can be a huge issue when importing an STL file into SketchUP. The import seems to prefer using all triangles and thus the maximum number of lines with no attempt to see which are unnecessary, leaving it up to the user to eliminate lines.

What techniques do you have for eliminating or avoiding unwanted internal surfaces in drawings?

Now with all it's luxury touches I'm finding TinkerCad more than a bit different in practice a completely different beast. I've done the few tutorials on the Tinkercad site which amount to little more than demonstrating a few controls.
Please can you recommend a proper series or course from beginner to hero? Or any other quality learning resource?

Hi All,

Just thought I'd let you all know that the Experimental Aircraft Association is offering FREE solidworks student licences (12months) with $36 membership. (You don't have to be a pilot or anything to join)

Note, this is a non-commercial licence and plasters "educational use only" water marks on drawings.

Membership to EAA is $36 (USD) if you tick the auto renew box. Or $40 without. You can then email them to undo the auto renew, which i had done and works.

There is a link in the EAA members area to download SW and get your licence.

Also comes with access to SW tutorials.

If you've not tried solidworks, there is a free online trial on the SW website. [www.solidworks.com]

Disclosure: I am an EAA member (for the SW licence) but otherwise, I have no vested interest in the EAA or Solidworks

Hello all,
Due to the nature of DIY OSH, typically there are few user manuals to go around. What software do you recommend in making pictures of the build. An example build in video of the Cyclops 3D scanner is [www.youtube.com]

The owner of the video has yet to post a reply in the comments to another user requesting the software to produce the video.

I am not looking to produce videos, just user manuals with "lego" like picures for the build instructions and I need the software necessary to do so.

update:
Additionally, coreldraw x7 technical suite is exactly what I am looking for in terms of creating instructions. However, it is not open sourced and very expensive. Are there alternatives?

I am looking for software that will take an STL model and render it into a depth map (slash height map slash greyscale 3D) image. I see plenty that will go the other way. Preferably something that is open source or that won't break the bank.

Meshlab has a depth map render mode, but it's not a real depth map. It's a vaguely depth-mappy shading mode that smothers detail.
Any suggestions?

I wrote my own STL viewer for Windows: [papas-best.com]

The reason is, I need to browse folders full of STLs and I was dissatisfied with the performance of common STL software.
My viewer, on the other hand, is very fast and opens the next file in a folder with the right arrow key (much like the photo gallery).
I currently do the double mesh split for dual color prints using my CAD software, but I think it would be quite difficult for a full color mixing head printer to have to split a mesh into many separate-color .stl files. Is there a piece of software (preferably free/open source) that allows "painting" the mesh and slicing into multi-material for a mixing head? I am thinking of something like what these guys use in their Rova4D (http://www.ordsolutions.com/)

I wrote what I think is an incredibly powerful module that will allow you to fillet any of your OpenSCAD modules retrospectively while keeping the original dimensions. You don't need design your part again, or start using rounded cube modules etc, just throw minkowskiRound() out the front of it and your good to go. But I can't help but thinking that surely someone has done this before? I figured some RepRap vetrans might be able to tell me.

Biggest downside is that it is very computationally intensive, needs low $fn unless you are willing to wait a long time (12 hours plus).
I was going to try and get this added to the MCAD library, but that project looks pretty dead!?

Hey folks, I'm new here, just wanted to get feedback from the community about a tool I'm making to create interactive 3D instructions. It's called JigSpace, and I've just released the first versions of the Jig Workshop, which you can get here (https://jig.space/create).

What's a jig? Check this one out - How does a lock work? It's simple, interactive, and gives you a spatial understanding of the problem.

The Jig Workshop lets you import STL or OBJ files, and create a simple, step-by-step presentation, and then immediately share it on the web. It's designed to be super simple and painless, my focus is on getting out of the way and making the process of sharing your instructions as easy as possible. It's all free, too.

It seems to me that creating assembly instructions is one of the more laborious and time-consuming part of 3D printing, and we've already worked with Christoph Laimer (designer of the 3D Printed Tourbillon) to make assembly instructions for his 3D prints. You can check them out on his page - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1249221, or directly here. These are his Tourbillon assembly instructions.

I'd be really keen to get feedback on what I'm building, I want to work with 3D printing communities to make this a tool that is useful.

Thanks for your time, more than happy to answer any questions you have!

Cheers,

Hi
I have a reprap 3d printer and I am looking for a good cad software to use for making parts.
I have been using a student version of autodesk inventor but I will be graduating soon and will no longer have that as an option.
I also have experience with solidworks, sketchup, 123d design, and autocad. My favorite is solidworks but it does not work on my computer.
I was thinking about trying fusion 360, but I was wondering what are some other options? Is fusion 360 a good option?
Thanks

Hey everybody!

My name is Chloe. Me and my team came up with D3CRYPT3D in response to the growing issue of artists getting their work pirated after spending countless hours and sweat equity into their work. The beta just launched over a week ago and we have been getting some fabulous responses with regards to improvements, features etc. Here is an updated explanation on how the software works. Please check it out :)

Also, check out our feature on 3dprint.com and 3ders.org

[3dprint.com]

Why would I want to use D3CRYPT3D?

You spend countless hours on your 3D creations. These files are sought after and worth real money. Your assets by nature need to change hands after they are created. Our New Build is up and wanted to say thanks to all those who have tried it. I will always post up here when there are changes to this program. Hope this helps you out. This is a more comprehensive explanation of how our program works.

D3CRYPT3D utilizes AES-256 Bit cryptography to fully encrypt the 3D asset itself. During encryption, SHA-2 hashing is utilized to uniquely identify the asset and allow for tracking. Inside the encryption, identifying metrics are stored which allow for full tracking of the asset from the moment it is encrypted. These metrics remain with the .OBJ file after it is unencrypted. The metrics, however, remain in an encrypted form.

D3CRYPT3D differs from Winzip and 7-zip in several ways:
1. There is no compression algorithm applied
2. The file type remains the same and can be opened in its native application, even in an encrypted state.
3. Asset tracking metrics are embedded in the encryption which allows for tracking throughout the lifecycle of the file.
4. The assets owner is identified by the calling card which gives the artist the ability to promote themselves and control their creations. When someone attempts to open the file, they are directed to the artist to contact them and request the access key.

D3CRYPT3D allows you share your assets with authorized parties and gives you recourse should an asset become pirated or leaked.

The purpose of the beta is to get feedback on vulnerabilities and suggestions on enhancements and feature additions.

The first iteration of the software we release will initially be able to track down the source of a leak. The leak, however, will not be prevented.

In our second iteration of the software, we plan to integrate with several 3D software programs as a plugin and control permissions on the files from inside the programs. In addition, we will introduce a multilayered encryption which is highly enhanced and requires information from multiple separate cloud-based servers in order to properly unencrypt the file.

Without the plugin, you will not be able to unencrypt the file. After the file is unencrypted, what you can and can’t do with the file will be controlled based on the permissions granted by the owner.

Down the line, we will introduce an encryption layer which will allow the file to remain in an encrypted state perpetually from the moment it is encrypted. This layer can then be integrated into gaming engines and 3D printers preventing the ripping of meshes from games while the assets are in play and preventing printing of unauthorized objects. If a person attempts to rip an asset, the resulting meshes will be unusable encrypted data.
We realize this is a never-ending battle. Our solutions will be defeated every so often, but our talented programmers will quickly patch the software vulnerabilities further enhancing the product.

Our cloud-based asset tracking and encryption will enable both artists and major corporate 3D asset holders to gain full transparency into the usage, dissemination, and proliferation of their assets in a managed and controlled fashion allowing them to maximize profits and snuff out piracy.

Our team has a deep and thorough knowledge of how data is stored and managed in Windows, Mac, and Pure Linux-based platforms such that we are able to architect systems and file structures in a manner which utilizes every functional aspect of a segment of data stored on a drive regardless of what platform the system is running.
We are not complicit with any government body. We champion protecting our user's data and strive to create an environment where the creator of an asset is in full control of their digital 3D assets.

D3CRYPT3D is by the artist, for the artist, and will always choose the artist first.
We need your support and feedback to help us in the endeavor of protecting 3D assets worldwide. Too much genius work is being stolen and will continue to be without this intellectual property protection. It’s time for D3CRYTP3D to protect our hard earned creations.
D3CRYPT3D. Protecting your ideas one polygon at a time.

FEATURES
Strong Multi-Layered Encryption: Protect your valuable 3D assets from piracy
Prevents unauthorized access to your assets

How It Works

1. Download and Install D3CRYPT3D-
Installing D3CRYPT3D is as easy as downloading the app and installing in on your computer. It doesn’t require any configuration or maintenance. The software automatically checks for updates each time you run it ensuring you always have the latest version.

I hope someone else finds this useful.
