3D Systems and Cubify and "The Cube"

I work in education and its brilliant. Out of the box, sketchup or blender models, straight to the printer software, cetntre, export and print. If you want a reasonably priced 3d printer which can work without asking too many questions and just works, get one. If you want to hack it, remake it, and do complex tasks, then maybe buy a commerical printer, rather than a 'home printer'. At little over £800, its a fantastic buy, and I think the audience cubify aim at is possibly education anyway (thus the bright colours). Finish can vary based on the supports it makes.....

Absolute bargain, kids love it, I love it.

Was your intent to be as vague as possible? Please provide more details! Also, you paid for a product from a highly commercialised producer, use their customer support!

Now that it is bumped anyway, that interview in the youtube vid was the cutest ever.

I think maybe the 'hate' against Bre is overblown. Maybe he was thinking about the ~100 of jobs at makerbot. I expect they over-hired and shouldn't have gotten 10M venture funding to match an fully oshw approach. It at least compromised them somewhat. But then, maybe having them there might turn out better than whatever else would have gotten the place instead.

I mean, i dont exactly trust them, but.. (I am not a very trusting person anymore.)

This is what "persuaded" me not to get one. (replying about "chipped" cartridges)

This is propapbly a late entry, but it is still valid on March 2013. I agree with most of what you ladies and gents said. Here's my bit regarding the Cube.

P.S: I sent the same to 3D System and I recieved, not surprisngly, a dry no-return/refund reply!

I think it’s ridiculous for a company as experienced as 3D System to enter the personal 3D printer area with such a failed machine. It is riddled with problems and issues akin to an amateur product. I have two Makerbot printers with much less problems and fail time in comparison. It is absolutely mediocre considering the “experts” behind it. The Cube is major failure wrapped in a fancy casing.

3D Systems should’ve thought more before making such a farce. They should’ve taken Apple’s lesson when they entered the MP3 player, mobile phone/smartphone business instead of piggybacking on their other successes (I assume).

I’m frustrated rather than amused with the whole thing ((.

It's funny to me. I got into 3d-printing and chose the Reprap project because I was confident in my ability to build something that works well, from scratch...
So far, I've had really decent luck.

I have no regrets about not buying a "commercial" home 3d option. Seems to me my own machines are more commercial than some of these companies' machines.

All we can do is hope people start to catch on eventually and stop buying junk.

I know the feeling, I have an up! here, which took and un believableable amount of modifying to get "running" even with their filament, and i suspect the cube isn't much different, putting aside the poorly engineered hardware of the up! the software that drives it is to be honest is pathetic to put it nicely, it's full of bugs and logic errors and contain features and functions which are outright dangerous eg displaying temperature as a % and this puts aside the random shutdowns mid print and other such features including no control over temperature

these days i get better quality prints on the prusa derivative and things like filament stripping and hotend trouble even with the crappiest of filaments is a bit of a thing of the past,

Thankfully you can bypass the filament cartridge in the Cube and use your own, but its firmware apparently won't accept standard GCode files and won't interoperate with popular RepRap host software. So I'm curious if any enterprising person who got stuck with a Cubify Cube (or a MakerBot Replicator 2) has managed to convert it into a vanilla RepRap so that any software can be used to drive it? My guess is that this wouldn't be terribly difficult, and you could probably get much better results.

Meanwhile, if you visit the Cubify Cube fan page on Facebook, there are complaints a-plenty about problems caused primarily by the "helpful" features of this consumer printer. For instance, if you let the filament get pulled in past the extruder it can be near impossible to remove. We in the RepRap world know we can just heat up the extruder and probably push it downward, but the average consumer is sending the printer in for service. After 90 days this will cost money. As RepRap owners know, there's no FDM 3D printer yet that doesn't need to be adjusted and tweaked and serviced every so often. Cubify is shooting themselves in the foot trying to package current technology into something reliable enough to be a consumer product.

believe it or not there is a bit of a positive to these cubify type machines getting cheapers and hitting the desks in numbers,
like all products they get hacked eventaully, to get more out of them

i have an up! here which was previously locate on the back corner of a room gathering a layer of dust due to a buggy firmware update and many many other problems, so i've very recently put a smoothie board in it and with a whole 30mins of calibration it's now printing witha better degree of quality than it was in the first place with a few modifications to the extruder it's also now almost as reliable as my prusa ... which says a lot

for companies like 3d systems and such to release a 3d printer full for bugs and logical errors is almost embarrassing, and you would think they would be able to produce something better to show for their decades of activity in the industry,

I recently got a Cube. First time trying to use it and the documentation on how to level the print pad sucks. You're supposed to adjust two knob bolts and make the print head move to the different corners of the print pad. If there is space between the print pad and the print head you're supposed to adjust these knob bolts and the z position until you fix the gaps on all four corners. The problem is the user guide has flat and useless illustrations of these knob bolts. There´s no perspective view for you to get a sense of where these things are exactly. Can't find anything online either. I think I might be trying to adjust the wrong bolts because they're on so tight I haven't been able to make them even budge. Will have to get in touch with support... I have another printer based on the LongboatPrusa. I had a few issues when I started with it also but mostly because I was a total noob. I use it all the time now and without any big issues. The Cube already has me pissed off because of the cartridge. Add to that the fact that the largest 3D Printing company in the world does´t have a quick tutorial video online for doing something so fundamental on one of their products (levelling the print bed), that just comes off as really bad.

3D Systems is used to deal with professionals and these people buy not only a $500.000 printer, but also a $15.000/year maintenance contract. Printer not properly calibrated? Call 3D and a technician appears on your site for fixing it.

OK, I'm a bit kidding. Probably they don't really expect things to be done this way with $800 printers.
