Recently, there was a discussion about FireballCNC. At their mailing list someone mentioned Zenbot.

Does anyone here know this device? Looks interesting - although not that cheap and without motor driver.

Hi Howie,

... in our german CNC-forum we discussed how cheap a good CNC-mill could be - a youngster hoped to start with 100 to 500 Euros ...

Beside the Zenbot and the CNC routing kit from [buildyourcnc.com] there wasn't much with this low price.

The agreement was to collect and wait, until you can buy a 'serious' CNC-mill at a price of 2.000 Euros and above ...

PS: i found an old CNC-mill with a 3axis-70Volt/6Ampere-controller for about 300 Euros, invested 300 Euros more for the millhead and some tools and make actually sucht things with my children:

They also come with bi-polar non ROHS compatible motors which the seller does not state anywhere in his auction tisk tisk....

You should also take a look at the Taig and Sherline mills:

You're getting much more machine for a bit more money (you'll be able to machine aluminum). The taig is a bit more robust than the sherline.

The old eBay link is no longer valid but an eBay search for "zenbot" turned up a current auction:

[search.ebay.com]

$550 + $40 shipping.

(Doesn't include Dremel 300, stepper motor drivers, cables, power, or software)

HDPE frame and Baltic Birch plywood table. Looks like it MIGHT be self-replicating, except for the plywood table.
