settings for reprap calibration
November 01, 2010 09:32AM
Hi all. I am in the process of calibrating my machine to dial in the settings I want to print. I am using the Reprap software with the sanguino 5d firmware and skeinforge to create the gcode (I have heard that this is the recommended way and I currently have the G3 hardware). Can someone point me to a settings file for skeinforge that has the standard settings for the machine so I can start my calibration from there?

Thanks!

Hi

Not that easy as. I started with the Skeinforge defaults and observed the results.

Useful information here:-

I am also trying to get my stepper driven extruder working with the 5D firmware and Reprap host software. I have 5D enabled in the Reprap software and I have Dimension enabled in Skeinforge. When I run the GCODE produced by Skeinforge, all the axes perform as expected but the extruder motor never moves! I have tried using the 3D-to-5D php script. This does make the motor move, but the script makes everything move rediculously slow. What should I be doing differently?

If I don't use the script and execute the GCODE produced by skeinforge, the stepper motor on the extruder DOES turn, but at a rediculously slow rate, maybe 1 step per 5 seconds.

Does it extrude at a proper rate when you press the extrude button in the RepRap Host software?

If not you might verify the value of E_STEPS_PER_MM in the motherboard firmware.
What are your Skeinforge feed and flow rates?

Hi

I would use a Terminal programme to communicate.

Then try simple commands.

G1 F500
G1 X100 E100

If you have your firmware setting right you should have the axis move 100mm and about a 100mm of plastic extruded.

A lot of info in this thread:-

I was never able to get the exturder to work with the RepRap host software, expecially when I was trying to run the stepper from the extruder motherboard.

Once I changed to use a regular stepper driver board like my other axis, I got my host software to run the extruder properly. I'm using the RepStrapper host software though.

I believe E_STEPS_PER_MM is set correctly as I can turn the extruder motor at a reasonable speed using the Extrude button on the Reprap GUI. My skeinforge feed and flow rates are somewhere on the order of 40-60mm/s (currently I am not on my home computer which has the settings). I will try the commands

G1 F500
G1 X100 E100

when I get home to test my machine.

I have tried

G1 F500
G1 X100 E100

and the extruder motor successfully turns while the X axis moves. However, the movement starts out fine but then slowly decelerates. It almost never even reaches X = 100 because of how much it decelerates.

What happens if you add F500 to the second line?

I am trying to print something whose initial GCODE follows:
G90
G21
M103
M105
M140 S60.0
M141 S30.0
M142 S0.0
M113 S1.0
M108 S255.0
M104 S240.0
G1 X-0.0 Y-0.0 Z0.4 F60.0
G1 X60.0 Y-0.0 Z0.4 F1500.0
G1 X60.0 Y40.0 Z0.4 F1500.0
G1 X-0.0 Y40.0 Z0.4 F1500.0
G1 X-0.0 Y-0.0 Z0.4 F1500.0
G1 X60.0 Y-0.0 Z0.4 F1500.0
G1 X60.0 Y40.0 Z0.4 F1500.0
G1 X-0.0 Y40.0 Z0.4 F1500.0
G1 X-0.0 Y-0.0 Z0.4 F1500.0
G1 X60.0 Y-0.0 Z0.4 F1500.0
G1 X60.0 Y40.0 Z0.4 F1500.0
G1 X-0.0 Y40.0 Z0.4 F1500.0
M108 S255.0
G1 X-5.76 Y-2.95 Z0.72 F750.0
G1 F798.0
G1 E0.0
G1 F750.0
G92 E0
M101
G1 X-5.76 Y43.27 Z0.72 F750.0 E942.97
G1 X-2.88 Y43.27 Z0.72 F750.0 E1001.722
G1 X-2.88 Y-2.95 Z0.72 F750.0 E1944.691
G1 X0.0 Y-2.95 Z0.72 F750.0 E2003.443
G1 X0.0 Y43.27 Z0.72 F750.0 E2946.413

The Extruder should only start moving when the GCODE on the 5th line from the bottom is executed. This doesn't seem to happen when I run the GCODE from the reprap software. The axes move, but the extruder doesnt. When I enter in
G1 X-5.76 Y43.27 Z0.72 F750.0 E942.97

manually in the terminal, it works correctly as the extruder does move.

What would cause this?

I think I figured it out. The problem is the M108 S255.0 command. I changed to to M108 R255 and now it works!

One final question. Is it possible to put the GCODE on an SD card and have the reprap software read from the SD card? I am using the Gen3 electronics and the motherboard has an SD card slot.

What are you using to generate the gcode with?

M108: Set Extruder Speed

Sets speed of extruder motor. (Deprecated in current firmware, see M113)

M113: Set Extruder PWM

Example: M113

Set the PWM for the currently-selected extruder. On its own this command sets RepRap to use the on-board potentiometer on the extruder controller board to set the PWM for the currently-selected extruder's stepper power. With an S field:

M113 S0.7

it causes the PWM to be set to the S value (70% in this instance). M113 S0 turns the extruder off, until an M113 command other than M113 S0 is sent.

Oh... Skeinforge.

Do you have Dimension activated?

I ask because my Skeinforge version generates the M113 commands.

Does anyone know how to use the SD card reader on the reprap motherboard with the reprap software?
