Using a Makergear hotent on a Sells Mendel

I just gave up trying to machine a hotend myself and bought a Makergear hot end, because people here seemed to have good luck with them. I have a Sells Mendel with a Wade's extruder, I got the groovemount hotend kit with the appropriate mounting plate and a 36mm barrel. I have the thing mounted and it looks like the nozzle only reaches a fraction of a mm past the nuts on the bottom of the X carriage. I can adjust my Z axis low enough that this nozzle will reach the bed, but then the nuts on the X carriage knock against the mounting screws of my bed. If there were just 3 mm more clearance I could make it work. To those of you that are using these, did I do something wrong mounting it? Or do I need a longer barrel for a Sells Mendel?

another option is try to try and go with a lighter x carraige, here are many variants. You can print one by setting your end stps and limits so that nothing knocks aginst the bolts until you create the solution.
