Advantages to other host software?
May 12, 2012 08:54AM
Hello,

I'm new and am just exploring the host software option available.
But I can't see why to use a alternative host software over the standard software other than the ability to integrate a different slicer. Other than slicing why do you use a different host software? I don't see much difference between opening - slice to gcode - print over open - slice and print.

Do you reccomend one for a Prusa?

Thanks for the help,

The most important part is the slicer (I prefer slic3r myself), and the host software you can use whatever flavour you prefer. I really like pronterface myself, as it's always works perfectly with the most common firmwares and is regularly updated. Plus, it's simple, fast and stable.

I understand you can get repg to work with some config hacking, and many people seem to like repetier host.

Just be mindful that you don't 'lock yourself down' to using only one specific set of tools. Try out various host softwares, slicers and firmwares from time to time.

would recommend an ultimaker.com build of replicatorg, easy and fast to import stl files, and generate gcode.

however repetier host is slick and imports stl, also has multiple slicers.
