Extruder stepper surging

I am having issues with my extruder surging/pulsing. In the video, I am using pronterface and extruding 5mm at a time, you can hear me click a few times, then I up it to extruding 10mm and click again.... the stepper starts pulsing... then I click the 10mm extrude once more and you can see it pulse a bunch of times. then you can hear the motor pulsing even when it's not extruding. this is happening with or without filament.

Any ideas?

Sounds like your stepper driver is overheating, shutting down, coming back on, and repeating. Turn the current down or point a fan at it.

Turn down the gain pot on the stepper driver board until it stops.
The stepper driver is overheating.
