Is our ABS filament UV stable?

Is our ABS filament UV stable?
February 15, 2012 12:57AM
I was just thinking if our ABS filament is UV stable. Can we use it
outside? I see many things that people printed that are for outdoor
use, but I've not seen anything written up on if the ABS that we use
is UV stable.

Non UV stable plastic tend to break down under the sun.

If the filaments are UV stable, are they all UV stable or just some of
the colors are UV stable?

example: I've seen the black cable ties being advertised as UV stable,
but the white/clear ones are not UV stable and should only be used
indoor.

Any idea?

Thanks,

Charles

With abs, you have to add a UV stabilizing additive when you mix your resin for extrusion, injectuon etc... We do for some of our injection molded parts for other customers. I would bet that any of the filament manufacturers right now do not ad d UV stabilizer to their filament resins, so i would aay no. Its worth emailing them.

303 Aerospace Protectant is a popular automotive UV stabilizing surface treatment. It might warrant testing a few different brands of ABS with and without this stuff applied.
