Hey folks,

im completely new in 3D printing and I was wondering which kind of accessories and tools do you guys use or searching for? Things which make your 3D printing experience better and easier. I mean things like kapton tape, painters blue tape, caliper, cutter... smiling smiley

Its interesting to hear that from you as professionals.smileys with beer

Thanks

The things I use the most, when everything is working fine, are

  • Tweezers
  • Needle Nose Pliers
  • Pottery Scraper
  • Dental Pick
  • Hairspray (I gave up using any type of tape)
  • ABS Juice (if hairspray doesn't work for ABS parts, rarely)
  • Acetone, for making ABS Juice, cleaning the bed (glass), part smoothing (ABS only).
  • Calipers, measure your filament is a must and in several places and average. Also needed for making your own parts, if accuracy matters.
  • Xacto Knife
  • Patience (this is the most important)

Wow! thanks for such a promt response!
Do you spray the hairspray on the heated bed without any concerns?

Long needle nose pliers for clearing the hamging dross from the nozzle.
Hair spray definately seems to help troublesome filament stick, just spray it on the bed and heat it up.

And a 3D printed custom tool holder of course!!

Oh and I bought a cheapo rotary tool with about a million attachments which has made part finishing and support removal so much easier.

I want to see pics of what you used. I tried a rotary tool and it destroyed my print.

Of course, the rotary one is this one. Obviously you need to be a bit careful as it can be a bit aggressive but it's ok if you go slow and keep the speed low smiling smiley

Basic tool holder (desk tidy type thing) below. There's a lot of different ones on thingiverse, this one is one I made to test a new filament and embossing text vertically

I think it was 0.2mm from memory smiling smiley I'll add more segments to the curved part next time I need something that shape. It's all a learning curve!

One thing I really missed was a ceramic screwdriver so you don't short-out the stepper drivers during calibration. One thing I missed even more, was a printable screwdriver to do this. I have actually been looking on thingiverse, but it wasn't available.

For a small rotary tool I use a battery powered Dremel brand. Mine is an older model but it's roughly the same specs as this one [www.dremel.com] . I also use jewelers files, hobby knifes (Xacto knives) and pin vise to dress parts.

Hammer, chewing gum, and a beer!

Swiss army knife. Mostly for the small sharp scissors for trimming the thread oozing out of the nozzle just before I start a print. Big blade for snapping prints off the bed and small blade for cleaning support.
And I've been cleaning the kapton tape with home-brewed vodka.
