I wanted to share this video I recently did on 3D printing a key:

Inspired by 3D printing a car key: [www.youtube.com]

For what I can tell, the more complicated the key (shape ect.) 3D printing them is easier then I expected.
Do you think lock companies should rethink the way keys are designed? 3D printing proof designed?

... some modern locks didn't have a mechanical structure at all - it's simply a 2-pin-connector or RFID-socket, where a unique digital code is exchanged.

Then the 'safety' is related on hard to hack codes and algorhytms ... but bad if you electronics breaks down eye rolling smiley

I think that as with any authentication system, key holds secret used to authenticate you. Its that secret that is used to authenticate you, not the skill to copy it, thus you shouldn't give away that secret in first place, that's true even for mechanical systems, they usually even have numerical representation.
