i3 Rods for SC10UU bearings ??
May 29, 2013 10:04AM
Hi,
I'm gathering parts to build an i3 ( 6mm Aluminium Frame )

The frame uses SC10UU Linear Bearings.

My question is, What rods should I order that will fit SC10UU bearings ?

So far I've ordered the following:
The Frame:
[replicatorwarehouse.com]

TheBearings :

Prusa 2 uses the following...

6 370mm M8 threaded rod Three per side
4 294mm M8 threaded rod Front/rear.
3 440mm M8 threaded rod Top/Bottom.
2 210mm M8 threaded rod z-axis lead screws.
2 350mm 8mm smooth rod
2 405mm 8mm smooth rod
2 420mm 8mm smooth rod

SO I am guessing that the "SC10UU" uses a 10mm diameter smooth rod.. yes ?
If this is so... which of the above rods would I have to change to accomadate the SC10UU linear unit ?

10mm smooth rods, I think chromoly is preferred over stainless as its much harder.

Hi & thanks for the reply....

So 10mm dia. rods Chrome rods are the preferred material.

My next question... is the Prusa 2 the same dimension as the i3 ? if can I simply use Prusa2 rods ?

the 405mm will have to be changed

yes preferred yes but for hardness stainless steel is better than chrome chips as it is plated

all i know is that looks to me they using the einstein variant for the plastic parts now i'm unsure if the x rods and the z rods are 10mm as my i3 im building uses 8mm and only 10mm threaded rod for the y axis, but honestly stainless steel if you can budget for it,

why make it easier and use the standard 8mm somooth rods the frame should accommodate that approach, as its only the plastic parts will change get the standard parts

@Chris33
I will try to source 2x stainless 405mm x 10mm dis. rods.
I'm new to RepRap.. Tomorrow I'll head into London to a reputable RepRap store. These are the guys with the Aluminium frame.

So I hope to they shed a little light regarding Rods etc..

I hope that by purchasing an Alu frame I can get rid of the dreaded " Z-wobble " I read so much about

Wow .. this is confusing.. I am looking over the Prusa i3 Build Manual ( Einstein Aluminium single sheet )
here's a link to the build manual for i3 PRUSA i3 Build Manual

There are so many conflicting rod sizes on that page.. & changes etc...

Does anyone know what the correct rods & bearings I should order for the " Einstein 6mm Aluminium Single frame "

I've already ordered SC10UU bearings.. but I believe they are not used in the 6mm Alu frame.
I'm now looking over the BOM for " EiNSTein VARIANT " I only see LM8UU bearings .. nothing about SC10UU bearings.. hhhmmm ??

here's a snippet from the page:

34 x M10 washers (y frame)
34 x M10 nuts (y frame)
4 x M10 x 210mm threaded rod (y frame short)
2 x M10 x 380mm threaded rod (y frame long)
3 x M8 x 30mm bolts ( x y and z idlers, X idler may need head ground off, a screw cap hex bolt will fit without modification)
3 x M8 washers (X Y and Z idlers)
3 x M8 nylocs (X, Y, and Z idlers)
8 x M3 x 8mm socket cap bolts (6 for Z motor mounts, 2 for Y motor mounts)
16 x M3 washers (6 for Z motor mounts 2 for Y belt mount, 8 for bed mount to PCcool smiley
4 x M3 nyloc nuts (bed mount to PCcool smiley
4 x M3 x 20mm (bed mount to PCcool smiley
5 x M3 x 10mm socket cap bolts ( 3 for X motor mounts, 2 for Y belt mount)
2 x 8mm x 320 smooth rods (Z smooth rods)
2 x 8mm x 350 smooth rods (Y smooth rods)
2 x 8mm x 370 smooth rods (X smooth rods)
2 x M5 x 300 threaded rod (Z axis)
2 x M5 nuts (Z axis drive nuts)
4 x M3 8mm standoffs (bed spacer above Y carriage to bed)
10 x LM8UU bearings (or equivalent) (3 for Y carriage, 3 for X carriage, 4 for X ends)
2 x M5 internal clear tube couplers for Z axis ( i used beer line)

Panic mode... sure hope I have not ordered the wrong parts sad smiley

I would just go with the standard 8mm smooth with the 10mm threaded rod

Ok... just got back from Replicator Warehouse

The rod details are as follows:

2x
370mm M8 smooth
4x
210mm M8 threaded
2x
380mm M10 threaded
2x
320mm M8 smooth.
2x
300mm M5 threaded

2x
350mm M10 smooth rods for (SC10UU version, normal version
would use M8)

I'm guessing that the SC10UU allow a better fit for the heatbed carriage.. as its made from aluminuim.
Normally the i3 simply has 4 x SC8UU linear bearings that are fastened with zip ties. but these new M10 SC10UU are a much better alternative to securing the heat-bed carriage.
