Anyone else having trouble getting straight acme rod?
August 17, 2013 05:00PM
So I just received my second order from mcmaster the other day and my acme rod arrived practically bent in a u. I got it swapped and this new one is bent to, just a whole lot less. Is there a better source out there? Do I have to spend money on the precision acme rod to get a straight one? It seems a bit much that a product, designed for exact linear motion, would arrive in any way other then perfectly straight.

Is there some straightening procedure I'm not aware of?

normally when i go to my fastener shop, to get the straight pieces i roll them across a flat looking section of the shop floor, the ones that roll the furthest i consider straight and the ones that flop and don't roll anywhere i put back or use fo the frames

If you're not overconstraining the rod, being crooked shouldn't matter.

I agree with crispy1 on this, although I wish they were available from McMaster in metric sizes at the same price point.

I'm building a new printer with lead screws I am buying from trinity labs. A bit more expensive than McMaster, but not sky high. And they are metric.
I'll let you know how it turns out, but it might be a while before it's operational.

crispy1 I do not have the tops of my lead screws restricted by anything and I am still getting a z wobble.

I am going to return this second rod and either order from roton or figgure something else out. Roton has a minimum order of $60 so either I have to order parts for some project I want to do in the future or I may have to do a little group buy if anyone is interested.

Does anyone know about the quality of Enco products?

This is so cheap I might just order it to play with. [www.use-enco.com]

I like McMaster, but they don't ship stuff properly. I ordered some linear guides from them ($80 a piece!) and they arrived loose in a box, and one of them did not move smoothly. Needless to say, I returned them. I then bought recirculating ball rails from Misumi, which arrived very well packaged to prevent damage.

I use Enco quite a bit. You are likely to have some of the same issues with them as with McMaster in regards to shipping. With both some orders are packed well, other times they aren't.

I wonder if the issue with mcmaster is with shipping? I live close enough to them that I could pick up my order at the will-call desk. I might try that sometime to see how it works. They certainly cant be beat with the diversity of their selection, and the speediness of their shipping. They;re the first place I turn to when looking for any hardware, especially metric.

I do exactly the same smiling smiley the people in the hardware store think I'm mentally ill or something haha.

'Hey theres that guy again that rolls the threaded rods on the floor'

Kind of intolerant/shortsighted if you ask me.. (they could also ask me why I am doing that and learn a thing or 2).
Anyway, it works!! smiling smiley

i mostly use M12 now as well so it makes a lot more noise and attracts a bit more attention than it used to
