Interesting...

Maybe this will eventually put us out of business...

http://pwdr.github.com/

I could see this as a full color printer using powdered sugar with an edible binder that uses food coloring... Kustom Kandies!

I bet you could make some awesome Dia de los Muertos candy skulls with something like that...

I don't see that putting us out of business seeing as powder printed parts generally aren't nearly as strong as FFF parts. Can something be done to powder parts to make them stronger?

One area where powder printers excel though is in accuracy and fine detail, as well as multi-color prints.

Any self replicating tech can be used in a RepRap.

Read the new write up on the reprap.org front page.

Reprap does not have to mean fused filament tech.

Future home RepRaps can be powder, resin etc.

No need to think an alternate style of 3d printing kills the concept of a self replicating machine; but I understand your excitement winking smiley

I love seeing these new ideas hit the scene smiling smiley

The RepRap definition, If taken too loosely, declares this miter saw stand is a RepRap.

The Miter Saw Stand - It is a machine which is fed a raw material, which is capable of making goods and its own parts (some not all, just like a RepRap)

All machines are like current RepRaps.... no machine will ever be able to replicate itself entirely. There is not really much point, any workshop has a set of tools which combined can be used to make new tools. To be honest I see the "self replicating" idea as a marketing concept, rather than an engineering reality.

You gave up on the Self Replicating idea!?!?!

winking smiley

Hahaha, it is long ways off!

I didn't mean it *literally*. Just in the sense that the technology continues to penetrate the cost barriers in a downward fashion. What's next? A reprap for laser sintering metal? ( I know they already exist, it's the cost issue i'm concerned about.) The choice between resolution vs. durability is now potentially a case by case decision. This is the sign of a very healthy nascent market - competitive and diverse. The start-ups of today may become the open-source giants of tomorrow...

It is an exciting time for sure smiling smiley

I am wondering if Delta Bots will take over the fused filament scene; I actually kind of hope so.

I feel like the giant heavy Cartesian machines are more in line with traditional CNC as opposed to FFDM which should need no force to move about.
