More on the consumer rather than the production side of things, but I thought I'd share something my alma mater's done recently:

So far as I can tell they aren't asking people to pay to use the machines yet. My guess is that the small build envelope and inconvenience of being in an academic building will keep them from losing a ton of money on filament. I mean, I couldn't even get an open machine in the laundromat most times because people didn't take their clothes out. Also, I guess they get a lot of PR mileage out of it.
It would be near impossible to get enough time on this thing to print out a set of parts for a reprap, but I may make use of it for spares or replacement parts
