HDPE and ABS water absorption

HDPE and ABS water absorption

Andy D. did some nice work for a plastic holder and mentioned that there was some concern for water absorption in HDPE and ABS.

What exactly is the % water absorption for ABS and HDPE in a 24 hr period.

I found it here

It is .3 for ABS and .03 for HDPE. Doesn't seem to be something we need to worry about for HDPE but ABS may be a concern...

Polypropylene has the best at .008.

You might want to look into coating with some sort of water-resistant material for objects that need it. This would be analogous to painting (priming?) wood, but it doesn't necessarily have to be a paint.

Just a thought.

Given that we really haven't been talking about printing solid objects the leakiness of our prints as to opposed to their tendency to absorb water might be quite an issue for some applications.

That's just a software/firmware problem though, right? Wouldn't it be simple enough to modify the code to extrude solid layers on the surfaces of objects?

Some things are very easy to say and quite hard to do. spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Just posting in relation to conserns about water absorption of HDPE. I pretty much think its a non-issue.

I don't think HDPE will ever have a problem with water absorbtion because it is so low but Vik Olliver reported problems with PLA, which has much higher absorbtion IIRC.

In the very limited tests I did with it I did not see any bubbles but then I work in a room that is warm and dry all year round. I expect in other parts of the world and in other types of building it may become a problem with PLA, and possibly ABS.

Hey Demented,

My original posting about HDPE absorbing water was in error. I was vaguely reading something about some filament absorbing water and thought it was HDPE. I shouldn't have posted that without knowing for sure. Sorry about that. smiling smiley

HDPE shouldn't be a problem. They make boats out of it. smiling bouncing smiley

That's what I thought. Had to check anyway and let people know what I found. Good to have a data sheet like that though.
