Blankets for Heated Beds?

Blankets for Heated Beds?

I was wondering if anyone has tried to add a "blanket" their heated bed to speed coming up to temperature?

For PLA, coming up to temperature is not a big deal, since the HBP comes up to lower temps really fast. But for ABS, waiting to come up to 100°+ C takes time (about 10 minutes). By adding a blanket (like fiberglass accoustic ceiling tile), it takes less time. You would have to not handle the "blanket" by hand, since you don't want any oils etc... on anything that touches the build platform. I am also trying a Kapton tape the fiberglass panel to boost the insulation R-Factor. I am also trying cellulose ceiling tiles, they are a bit heavier. Last year, I tried to burn one up in a wood stove that was red hot on the outside. The wood stove didn't even singe the cellulose panel. Whatever the heat treatment they added to it, it works extremely well.

If you have done this, what material are you using?

For waiting on cooldown periods of the bed, I blow a fan to speed it up a bit, although I have been playing with the idea of swapping glass plates like "pallets" used in high speed machining centers, and pre-heating the glass plates in a lab oven to reduce the wait time.

You can try a fire cloth, used in welding. I often just throw a dish cloth on there since that is what I have on hand.

I've basically co-opted a pan holder from the kitchen. It's about 200mm square, and it never gets too hot to handle. It is a little burnt-looking on one side now. I've read of people insulating the bottom as well, but I'm not sure what materials they use.

For smaller prints, and with a decent Z calibration, you probably don't have to wait for 100°C. I've been slacking off by about 20° lately on some parts with about a 200mm² base. I could probably go cooler, since they are really stuck on there (I haven't been waiting for the bed to cool much either).

that's a great idea for quicker bed heat-up. thank you!

Sometimes, I throw a beach towel over the whole machine while printing. The air temperature reaches about 65 degrees C when the bed is running at 110 deg. C
