Can this detail be achieved?
October 13, 2012 01:24PM
Hi,

I am new to the forum. I got into 3d printing recently and badly want to make one.
What I am looking for is to make figurines of anime like characters or real people.
Can this level of detail be achieved from a reprap?

Thanks

... this detail and surface accuracy is achievable with UV-resin-printers built around DLP-beamers.

The 3D-data can be captured by StruccturedLight-scanning with David-laserscanner and SL-scanning - look here for some samples of scanned action figures: [www.david-laserscanner.com]

With reprap-printing you can try with 'smoothing' the surface of a figure printed from ABS with finest nozzle diameter and maybe 0.1mm layer height and then put in an enclosure with Acetone vapour for some hours, so the surface details averge to a smooth finish ...

This model on Thingiverse and the copies made by other people will give you some idea of the current level of detail achieved on FDM 3D printers. Even with fine nozzles and 0.1 mm layer heights we would not be able to get the same level of detail as your photos.
Here is the best I have managed so far. This was printed on my Mendel90.

Well I was also wondering if these could handle High detail structures like cartoon and anime figurines? I'm asking before I invest what little funding I have.

here are some Files (Hope I did them right) If I didn't do thes right I also left the Zips they came in. All files are OBJ and STL

The Files are ripped strait from games so they should be in good order.

I can tell from your file sizes those are low poly game models.

these files are a few thousand polys short of any real level detail.

Most all models ripped from games are going to be very low poly.

These better?

Hit upper limit for file size.

Files include Deadpool and Felicia from Marvel VS Capcom 3 and Cat Woman from Arkham City

DP - 725kb
Felicia - 830kb
CW - 977kb

I plan on also using many of the files here they would be mostly for show and personal collection.

Wow, a 16m tall woman!
And then one less than 2mm tall - that one you can forget!!

A high poly (res) file would be more like 50-200mb

You would be surprised at the level of quality that you can achieve with FDM if you, your printer and your software get good enough...

Printing single walled objects helped push me over the edge from good prints to great prints.

The first thing it will help you to do is get your extrusion ratio correct. This is key, but few do it: With digital calipers, a super steady hand and powerful magnifying glass, your can measure your single wall widths and dial your extrusion ration so that your theoretical extrusion widths and actual extrusion widths actually match!

Your prints will not kick butt without doing this!

As posted, a lot of those characters would be printable. I would want to draw in some support structure for sure. The STL files you shared are not super high quality. Keep in mind that an STL does not have to be huge to be high quality.

The Yoda above was from a 2mb STL.

The Problems with the files I linked is they are FROM the games. Ripped strait out. but I'll look at making one of my characters to see if I can
