What SD card to get?
October 18, 2012 02:26PM
Looking to add an SD card to my setup.

Have Melzi board with ATmega644PA (SMT mounted) with a built in slot for sd card. Slot has a number 12615 on it
Running Marlin

also have a ramps1.4/arduino board not currently in use, but might be useful to get an sd card which could work across both setups

From:

[en.wikipedia.org]
"The Secure Digital format includes four card families available in three different form factors"

also

"A newer card may offer greater capacity than the host device can handle."

so is there a max memory limit on the SD card to get?
if the answers yes, does that limit the number of gcodes / types of print that can be done?

Also looks like ATmega644PA wont suport and LCD screen - unless theres an alternative?
Also read somewhere that Kingston SD cards not suitable

So what SD card to get?

Thanks in advance

Mike

I've had good luck with Sandisk cards, both 4Gb and 2Gb.
None of my Kingston cards work from 2Gb to 8Gb.
You can get a lot of GCode on even a 2Gb card...

Thanks polygonhell.
I figured out the form factor, its micro SD, can get 4gb for £3
Looks like theres an add on for a ramps 1.4.

I have never tried using SD cards with arduino mega, only with the smaller arduinos, but it's not easy to find a card there that works either.

It has to be an SD card and not an SDHC card (that's the older, slower standard, the physical sizes are all the same), but even then, not every one works.

Sounds like bit of a lottery. Anyway I ordered & already got a Sandisk micro SDHC. Not tried it yet
