Crowd funding to make a video guide?

Crowd funding to make a video guide?
November 20, 2012 09:38AM
Hi all.

I am a bit of a film maker. But I love technology.

Been wanting to make a RepRap for a while and I thought that I would create a video tutorial at the same time (as well as a vlog and blog).

The RepRap I want to build is the Prusa.

What I will be doing is documenting the build of it on my blog and in video blogs to.
But the main part of the project will be making the video tutorial with a step by step video guide showing how to make one.
I want it to help people who are thinking of building one or are building one and need a hand.

One big problem with doing such things is that it costs money.
I thinking of starting a crowd funding project on KickStarter to fund the parts to build a RepRap.

I will fund all video equipment and lighting myself.

From doing the videos on YouTube I will earn revenue that will go towards paying the next project that will be the next generation of RepRap.

Ill be making the videos in my studio.... (my shed tongue sticking out smiley ) with multiple points of view to help the viewer.
I also will be talking through the video giving a description on what I am doing and tips for the viewer.

The blogs are going to be about the progress of the build, things that went well or did not go well and other tips/ problems along the way.
The blog will be in the form of a video and a Blogger blog.

I would like your thoughts on this.

I have seen a few people successfully do this on kickstarter and offer only rewards like printed parts. Well I can also do this and offer other things.

Thanks for reading. Please tell me what you thing. Any suggestions are welcome!

Jack,

I found this YouTube playlist very useful in getting the gist of the whole thing down, even though my parts varied slightly. A very good free set of videos, so I reckon it would be tough to top that particularly when crowd-funding / donations are involved.

So basically you want to Kickstarter to get people to buy you a printer? The printer, camera, and lights, are the only things I see here that costs money....

If you are a bit of a film maker, how do you not have video equipment already? Save your money, BUY your own printer, and build it. There are already plenty of assembly videos of many different printers already on the net.

Do you have any experience building 3D printers?

I would much rather see instructional videos from someone that has build about 10 to 20 printers, of different designs.

I just built a Prusa variant this summer, and there is a ton of possible problems when you actually start printing that can relate clear back to the very first assembly step.

"From doing the videos on YouTube I will earn revenue that will go towards paying the next project that will be the next generation of RepRap."

So how exactly do you think you can earn money on Youtube videos?

oooo I like quizzes!

A) No but in a way yes.
Want to build one of my own. But being a student I have no money. Doing a kickstarted will help to fund one. In return ill make video guide and give away free parts.

cool smiley I do. But I have set aside a few quid of my own to get some new lights.

C) Semi build two before with a mate. Sadly he sold them soon after as he moved.

I would be willing to contribute where necessary. (If you need)

I work on a cintiq21 in After Effects, Photoshop, and Premiere all day. smiling smiley
So I would probably be more help on the production side than the printer. (Still consider myself a newb on 3D printing)

Seams like everyone is saying negative ATM :/

Would love some help with doing overlays and stuff.

I can put video together but I am no designer at such things.

Good video tutorials would certainly help some people to get started smoothly.

The problems I see with your idea are :

1) You want to ask money for doing what a lot of people already do "for free" (putting videos up on youtube). This is going to turn yourself into a target for people who are being annoyed by "ez fast make money with reprap quickstarting" scheme we have seen a lot recently. Hence the negativity.

2) You need to gather some knowledge on the matter before being able to start "teaching" others, even through a video media.

If you are studying for a filming related career, you might make that a long term project.

Most of my technical comments should be correct, but is THIS one ?
Anyway, as a rule of thumb, always double check what people write.

Wow what a douche.

Just because you have a bit a paper saying you can does not mean you are any good at it.

Just because I don't does not mean I can't do better than you. S get your head out your backside.

I've taken out my own stiches once, so does that make me a bit of a surgeon?

It looks like you haven't even edited together two seperate pieces of footage.

Check.....check....

I'm certainly not speaking from a place of any skill, knowledge, experience, ability, or vision.......
