When I decided to build a printer completely from scratch the extruder seemed like the most daunting part to try to fabricate (I have very limited machining capability). Then I hit on the idea of using the wire feed mechanism from a MIG welder. All I had to do was remove the DC motor and replace it with a small stepper.
I have to say it works really well. The pinch roller is easy to adjust. It is easy to load. And best of all you don't need to try and build a hobbed bolt. The drive wheel pushes PLA and ABS really well and is replaceable for different filament sizes.
Since it worked so well for me I though I would post the idea here in case anyone else was inclined to try the same idea. I got mine on ebay for $25 but they are available from any welding supply shop as replacement units.
