Is it me or reprap.org is very slow lately? and it doenst seem to be getting any better.

So I thought Id check if its a generalized problem with you guys and then maybe we can discuss what can be done to help whoever is hosting this thing boost the bandwith?

Fred.

I personaly wouldn't mind donating a few bucks.

Slow for me too at times.
But i don't think it's the bandwidth that's the problem...

"Feels" like DB queries blocking during heavier usage hours. Either due to the DB machine being underpowered, or non-optimized queries.

I've noticed it also. I would drop a few bucks to help if needed.

Side note, does anyone know if this forum works with any of the mobile forum apps? Doesn't seem to like Tapatalk sad smiley

+1 for the offer of a donation - but yes, forums are heavy users of databases. Perhaps a solution like Google App Engine would make it a bit more scalable.

In fact, there's quite a few out of the box Django (Python) options, which would run on GAE:

to be honest it's not just this forum that seems to have slowed down a bit several of the other forums seemed to have slowed down quite a bit as well,

i'd be hedging my bets that it's some of these badily written spam bots and such that are doing it,

I got in touch with the guy responsible for the forums and wiki here. Took a while, but here's what he said. We (reprap) are hosted on a server that is donated to someone who likes reprap. The trouble is bandwidth, and we need help to set up mirrored servers to help speed it up locally.

Could we just start up a fund to buy hosting with amazon cloud or something? I would offer my hosting, but i'm sure my bandwidth isn't any larger than what's currently being used.

It doesn't appear to be a bandwidth issue - [www.webpagetest.org]

Time-To-First-Byte is really slow which suggests an under-capacity server or DB (had to tell externally)

Text-based resources such as html, css, js etc aren't being gzipped so they're taking longer to download than they should.

Web performance is what I do as a day job. If the guys who run this want help to improve the performance ping me...

I agree this is not a BW issue, though it might play a very minute part in the overall picture but not enough to worry about, it is a DB issue. I frequent many sites and some have had to offsite their DB to share the load or to completely remove it from the hosting site because the hosting site hosts other sites that use the same DB machine as they did. They left the server up where it was and moved the DB offsite and it became breezy again.

One sure fire way to tell if DB or BW is to hit edit and if you are having to wait, like I just did, for it to allow you to edit your message you have a DB issue.

For me it usually become way much slower when the USA wakes up - I'm In France so around 11AM it starts slowing down.

Most of my technical comments should be correct, but is THIS one ?
Anyway, as a rule of thumb, always double check what people write.

... with >20k 'unique visitors' per day (and X more for people frequenting the site more than 1x per day) this seems to be normal eye rolling smiley

It's always been very slow down here in New Zealand, well for me anyway whatever time of night or day. I often have time to go and make a cup of tea while the sites loading

OMG, it took about 70 seconds for this page to come up. I literally brought up two other pages and cleaned out some spam from email in the time it took for this page to finally come up. :/

I find that it is very fast, and I've seen no speed issues here in western Canada at anytime of day.
It seemed that much of the internet did slow down around Christmas, but then it sped right back up again.
I'm just using a small 3g network, so I'm not on anything super fast either.
The site pops up in under half a second, and the topics I click on are about the same speed - anytime of day.
I don't know if this helps you guys figure it out, but I thought I'd mention this.

It is a Db issue as most of the day it just sucked and it effects working on the wiki too.

Ok, I'm just saying that I have not been noticing any issues over the past month myself.
Maybe I'm just hitting it at the right time, although I do come on here a lot, and at all different times of day.
I can call up this post, or any other post, and edit, and I see no delay at all, and I understood that should be an indicator that it is database related.

It's definitely struggling, and quite a few people have offered to contribute.

So how can we organise this?

FWIW, it is quite slow for me too, and has been for quite a while.

I'd be very happy to hit the Donate button if that helps!
