Check out Ben Heck's Double Decker 3D printer.

Video 3

He builds it mostly on camera in a 3 part video series smiling smiley

More like parallel printer. Great idea if you're doing production work, but comes with the risk of twice the wasted filament if a print goes bad.

But that thing is going to shake its self to pieces at any appreciable speed - that top support looks sketchy, especially throwing that heavy X-axis around.

And what's with those belts and pulleys? They are HUGE!

He needs a filabot or some other type of 3D print recycler to save the plastic from botched prints smiling smiley

The amount of filament lost by a failed print just doubled otherwise.

Gotta give him props for the custom design and creative thinking.

He mentions he preferes acetal bushings over linear bearings. Your thoughts?

I know the long belts are different than we usually see, but is there anything inherently troublesome about that?

I also thought it was interesting to know that a printrboard can drive two extruders from one stepper driver. I have never used a printrboard before, but am compelled to try one after seeing one in action smiling smiley Any positive or negative thoughts on the printrboard?

Can't view the video unless you make him some money so I can't see it. But from the description here it sounds like he ran with my idea of running two machines off of one set of electronics. Does it work for him?

it works out for him. He prints two squirrels at once at the end.

Not sure I understand why you can't watch the video. He is sponsored by element 14, but I am not sure why that creates a moral dilemma.

If ad blocker is turned on they do not let you view the video and I have no interest in viewing ads to see his work. I would rather not promote his work and never ever link anyone to it.

Well excuse me for opening a gateway to pure evil. I regret every ill-conceived character I typed.

For those who are already tainted by darkness, there is a neat 3d printer video on the otherside of that link.

My iPhone did not melt when I watched it, so you will probably be ok... YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!

The Ben Heck show is hosted by revision 3 ( a YouTubeish Internet tv site) which seems to have no malevolent purpose.

The show plays fine for me in chrome with pop-ups turned off.

I expected crazy comments from you Sublime... about the design. I didn't expect you would find conflict with the manner in which the video was hosted.

This community (myself included) is full of nuts!

If you enable Adblocker you will get a big yellow triangle where the video is and it says you can not view it unless you turn off adblocker. Adblocker blocks all the ads pasted everywhere on 90% of websites nowadays. With it enabled you get way way faster page loads because it ignores a huge portion of most pages content as it is nothing but ads. It also means you do not have to pay for gigs of extra bandwidth each month from all the ads you end up having to download.

It is actually one of many many many reasons I do not use Thingiverse anymore. When they switched to their new format all I saw was a website that was 65% white space and had a horrible flow. I never realized why it was so bad until I saw it on a computer without adblock and realized all the white space was where they had put Spam.

Fair enough.

I still hoped you would watch the video and come back and tell us something like "gears are so 15th century" or "I can't believe he is powering it with electricity"

No it's not that complicated, he has a long X axis and just mounts 2extruders a fixed distance apart.

I'm using adblock plus with firefox and can view it, I do agree that how ads are handled has gotten out of hand.
The video is interesting.

Running ad block in chrome, could view video with no issues and saw no ads.

I've heard of people with MBI replicators doing this same sort of thing with their dual extruders, but since the nozzle distance is small they are limited to small parts. [www.thingiverse.com]

Nothing conceptually earth shattering here, but his execution is interesting.

Just download the video from the RSS feed and watch it locally. I have a perl script running nightly on my nas that downloads this, and many other, RSS feeds. No commercials at all except for the ones recorded inside the video, but since I'm watching locally, I just fast forward
