Layer Height and Width/Thickness

So I read a thread where nophead said the layer width shouldn't be large than the head diameter. I have a solidoodle 2 (sorry, not a reprap) and the defaults are .3 layer height, .42 width and .35 nozzle diameter. If what nophead is saying is correct then the width should be something like 3mm and the layer height 2mm or so. Am I understanding this right? Thanks.

Anyone?

You're layer width sould be less than the free air extrusion width which will be larger than the nozzle orifice.
The w/t needs to be over 1.5 or the filament is likely to snap.
I would personally recommend setting W to the nozzle width +/- 10% and determine your maximum t from the 1.5 limitation.

nozzle head diameter is the end of the nozzle orifice, typically 0.5mm or less. the feedstock is 1.75mm, or 3mm when it goes into the hot end. for 0.35mm nozzle no higher than 0.3mm seems correct with a good build height of 0.2mm
