FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE TO BENEFIT THE COMMUNITY:

DO NOT unwind a whole 1kg (or >) spool of filament from the spool and plan on feeding it to your printer as an unwound pile. This will not work for one main reason; massive kinks, knots, tangles, twists, turns, buckles, loops, and what have you! It will pretty much ruin a good line of filament due to the mess it will create. Imagine a giant slinky(do people still have those?) that has been in the bottom of a toy chest way too long. It's pretty much impossible to untangle. So spreading the enlightenment from my mistake to all of you, leave the filament on the spool!!

Have a nice day, and happy printing! smileys with beer

You are using 1.75 eh? ;-)
Yea never take it off the spool or buy it not on a spool...

It's not impossible, just difficult.

Think of re-spooling it as a zen meditation.

I have done this once by accident with a 5 lbs spool of 3mm ABS. Dropped an open coil putting it on a spool holder. Filament explosion. Took a while but eventually got it done.

You can also use it as an opportunity to work on your filament swapping skills! When I've had that happen, I cut off the filament, untangle it, pause the machine, quickly replace the old filament stub with a new untangled length, and keep going until it tangles again. Eventually I could do it in about 10 seconds.
