I'm still relatively new to all of this. Now I've got my Mendel 90 running I want to download things off Thingiverse to test print. I press download expecting to get an stil file but end up in the Type column getting something called "Certified Trust List" can anyone tell me what this is please

Just ignore it. It's an stl file.

Microsoft Windows uses the .stl extensions for these trust lists. That's a conflict you can indeed almost ignore, just don't double-click .stl files. Open them from within the intended application. Or use right-click "Open with ...".

Or do as I did and using right-click "Open with..." and check the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and THEN select your program e.g. Netfabb Studio Basic (in my case) and click on OK. Now double clicking on an STL file will open it using the application that you selected.

i too have downloaded stl files with a certified trust list under type. right clicked, open with solid works( cad program) it does open and lets you rotate the image, but wont let you select any part of the image, as if the file has no vectors or edges, as if it isnt there.
