I am having so much fun with my new printer!
March 25, 2013 07:43PM
I have so many people to thank John and Steve (SeeMeCNC) Johann (Who I think everyone knows) Zack (Inventables) and the community!
I made my first prints on Friday. By Sunday I was making prints I never thought possible.

Very nice Werner. Looks great. How much did it set you back if you don't mind me asking?

Looks like some serious dough went into this one. Are those arms carbon fiber? I've always wanted to have a RepRap build with carbon fiber but the costs are holding me back. Nice build did it take much to configure and get running.

Hi Keith, I am not real good with keeping track of my costs and a lot of stuff I already had. But I can give you some idea. The most expensive things would be electronics and linear rail system. Rambo and LCD about $250 (SeeMeCNC) Linear rails and bearings I bought on sale but even at everyday price is about $150.00 (Inventables) The 1/8 6061 T6 Aluminum sheet I bought 2 of at $38 a pc. at a local metal supplier. McMaster Carr I spent about $150 for hardware and the very important Teflon 2mm id tube my filament is going through. I bought a big 29 amp power supply at (LightOjects) If you never checked out this site go there! Lots of cool building stuff and great pricing not to mention the owner Marco is a really nice Guy! I have a dedicated supply for logic and steppers I picked up on ebay for $18. It is the kind you see used on laptops 5 amp. The stepper I got at another favorite place I like shopping (MPJA) the motors was the best deal of all at only $8 a pc. I am tempted to buy all they have at that price man these little suckers are awesome. The heated bed is done with an 8x8 silicone heat pad I think was only $20. For the hot end parts I bought a (MBE Extruder v9 ) $34. I had most everything else to build it. It was one of the most fun builds I have done.

Hi Buddy, Yes I used 3/8 od 1/4 id carbon 36" cut into 6pc 12" long. It was some stuff I had from model aircraft building. You can see the my reply above to get an idea of costs but for me it was not bad. I built a beautiful CNC router that I use all the time to build all types of machines. It is what I used to machine everything except a few of the pc making up the hotend. Setting it up was easy thanks again to John and Steve at SeeMeCNC SeeMeCNC and Johann Reprap/Wiki. I use Slic3r and liked the program so much I donated $25 to these Guys. I cant believe they give it away! I may have been lucky but I about filled my pants when I pull off my first print. Just a little tweeking and I am making parts like the ones you see on my extruder driver (Black ABS plastic drive bearing arm and spring holder.)

@ REPRAP SQUAD - there is a few places where carbon fibre tubes will not make too big of a dent in your pocket. I have dealt with the first ones, quality is superb and with the wrapped tubes from fabric/prepreg also suitable for structural applications.

And after a quick search these also looks more or less affordable:

Thanks for the heads up I will check them out. I'm thinking a rostock derivative will be my next build and I definitely want carbon fiber for the rods. Thanks again.
