ugh Heater issue again

SO after finally getting a print my heater has died , i had it set to heatup to 180c for pla and i noticed it was smoking , which stopped so i continued to slice and print my model, it started and was fine until layer 6ish where the psu shutoff and the print aswell. i started everything back up and tried to reprint but the heater seems to be dead. on the GEN6 board the led for heater is on and there are 12v going to the resistor but it doesnt heat up :#

any ideas why ?

Sounds like the resistor is open circuit. Have you disconnected it and checked the resistance of it?

yes its around 5 ohms, but there is voltage running through the heater block itself, im gona try and pull out the resistor and then seal it somehow.

nevermind i removed the resistor and it did show about 31 ohms , but i tried hooking it up outside the block and it got warm then died , and now its completely dead. so rummaging around my table i found this big ceramic resistor and was wondering if id be able to use it ?
if so what would i have to change if anything ?

its 10ohm 10watts , i figure i could secure it to the side of the block with thermal paste and alot of kapton until i can order a new resistor. just wondering if itll be able to reach temp needed :\

Well 10 ohms will only deliver about half the wattage. If you do try it, you will need a super thermal bond and I'm not sure sure how you can achieve it with that set-up. Have you not got a local electronics dealer?

nope , just radio shack but they dont carry much :\

tried it and it did heat up to 180c but it took about 45 minutes and couldnt hold the temp while printing sad smiley

This just happened to me last night. Ther is12V running to the resistor but it isn't heating up. I re-wired my hot end and connected it directly to a 12V line to test and it heated up fine. I'm getting no volts on the grey wire on pin 1.

Were you able to fix this on your board, Rooski?

wrap the resistor around with aluminum foil, about 3 or 4 wraps of it. this will prevent one part from getting really hot and allow for longer resistor life. wrap around all 4 sides.
