Turning printed parts ?
April 29, 2013 05:50PM
I want to print a part and finish 1 surface on a metal lathe. I am new to printing so lots of stuff is not obvious to me yet but what advice can peeps offer for this task ?
I imagine 100% fill, and ABS would be prerequisites ? High speed and a sharp tool on the lathe also ?

:-)

I'm not sure about the metal lathe, but I have used a woodturning lathe quite a lot. I suspect that PLA may actually turn better than ABS. ABS is a little soft and may not turn that well, but the rigidity of PLA would help provided your tool didn't dig in too far and shatter your piece..
I'm not sure if high speed is a good idea, but sharp tools is a must.

I would have thought that high speeds would cause too much heat?

I haven't tried it, but even drilling out PLA is tricky because it tends to melt if the tool is moving even slightly fast. I suspect you;d have the same issue with turning something down.
Though you could probably get around it with enough coolant.
