Calculating tool paths...

Has anyone considered using a Sony Playstation 2 or 3 for calculating complex tool paths using vector computing?

If so, what was your conclusion?

No, but I have considered leveraging the two NVIDIA graphics cards in my PC with the open source CUDA parallel C compiler.

You can use just one, or link as many together as you can afford. (or need)

I have one thing to say: BOINC.

Boinc is a respectable project, but i think you would be hard pressed to use it for for hobby projects. However, once you link 2 or more playstations together for your own use, you would then be able to assist in their important research.
My suggestion was aimed more at the main Reprap team contributors, to give them a cheaper source of high end computing power. In the end, the Reprap team could allow its Reprap users (us) much of the same features as BOINC allows their users if they choose.
The systems are cheap, abundant and powerful.
Scientist, Engineers and universities alike are using this technique more and more all the time. I am sure MENDEL and many of it's theoretical components could use some extra computing power for some of its complex mathematical calculations. That is where down time on our computers can be of assistance.
