makerbot company may be going up for sale!!!

Found this interesting article. [mashable.com]
I imagine this includes thingiverse. There were a few small changes with thingiverse after the 10million cash injection. Imagine how much could change after a 300million injection.....

I guess the Thingiverse ToU will get a little more scrutiny now...

Quote
Thingiverse Terms of Use, Section 3.2
License. You hereby grant, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant, to Company and its affiliates and partners, an irrevocable, nonexclusive, royalty-free and fully paid, worldwide license to reproduce, distribute, publicly display and perform, prepare derivative works of, incorporate into other works, and otherwise use your User Content, and to grant sublicenses of the foregoing, solely for the purposes of including your User Content in the Site and Services. You agree to irrevocably waive (and cause to be waived) any claims and assertions of moral rights or attribution with respect to your User Content.

It would be hilarious if MBI sold out to DDD and they in turn integrate Thingiverse into their marketplace...

I don't see 3D being involved. There is no upside for them. They have a more sophisticated manufacturing channel and are a far larger company. The Makerbot brand is about the only thing that could be of any value and I don't see that being worth $300 mil. I think someone like Dassualt or Autodesk would benefit more from the acquisition though my guess is that it will be Bezos or a Bezos lead contingent. 3D got Alibre a couple years back and just within the last few months branded that product Geomagic. Dassualt doesn't have a consumer hardware arm (and they could use a bit less expensive software line) and this could be a good fit. Same with Autodesk. My guess would be a large software company that already has the software modeling capability that want to integrate with hardware. Getting the software toolchain more consumer friendly will be the next big step to having a wider user base adopt the technology. It won't take the mass market until it becomes more user friendly and integrated to the hardware.

ADSK seems like a particularly good fit, given their consumer-friendly "apps" and recent acquisition of inventables.

If you're looking for somewhere this won't happen, may I take this opportunity to plug : http://www.fabfabbers.com/

The idea is you keep your models in your own repo, and FabFabbers is just a convenient view on them.
