Ord Bot Large Format (12"x12"x12")
June 11, 2013 08:57PM

I have a Hadron Ord Bot and I really like it. Now I am building a large format (12"x12"x12") of this for my cousin. Has anyone done this before? If so, how did it turn up? Please post some pictures.

is this designed for abs or pla? cause i want to know how you will wire up the heated bed considering the size?

are you by any chance a filipino? the beer made me think so ;P

It is for both pla and abs. I will have a 12"x12" heated bed. The heated bed I ordered is already wired up. I just need to extend the wires if needed. And yes, I am Filipino.

are you in rp? cause id like to know if the aluminum sections are available locally.

so the hb is controlled independent of the motors? what board are you using?

i really like how you made the frame. winking smiley

I am in SF CA. I ordered the alum makerslides from inventables. I dont know what you mean by "hb". This is gonna be controlled by an arduino mega and ramps 1.4. I already have a Hadron Ord Bot so I am using that as a template.

You will find that the Z axis makerslide will flex a lot, fore and aft. I have built 3,12 inch cube printers as of right now and here is some of what I've done to beef up the Z axis.

I used 2060 with cast angle braces

Used 2080 with openrail to make the bed a lot more stable. Before adding this the bed was never very stable when printing.

Here one that is all done but adding the power suppies and extruder.

Hopes this helps

That was beautifuly done! I have used aluminum brackets in the back to hold the z axis instead of the plastic ord bot feet. I hope it holds up well. What kind of bed are you using? Its hard to find a big heated bed. Also, what is that spring wire organizer you are using? I want to buy one but i dont know what it's called. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the complement. I made all the plate parts myself on my Bridgeport.

Just the aluminum brackets on the back of the z will not hold it steady enough while it is printing. I have them along with the cast brackets and it still sways a bit while printing. The long springs came from mcmaster carr. I used part #9664K17 for the bed and z axis. The one that I used for the carriage is part #9664K21.

The heatbed is a Helios 300 prototype. I don't know if Roy has anymore. I emailed him tonight to see if he has any more cause I need at least 2 more. The QUBD store also sell a 12 X 12 but they are out of stock also. The Helios is a little heavy and I have to slow the printing speed down some. I'm trying to get some made like the MK2's but will be 12 X 12. The MK2 boards are about 60% lighter than the Helios.

Here is what the bottom of the bed looks like. I lightened it up as much as I could without loosing it strength.

Here is what the back looks like

Yes its hard to find a 12" bed. Qu-bd said they will have some in stock next week. But i have to make a custom bed to hold the qu-bd heated bed since It is a flexible bed. Im still trying to figure out what material to use for it. Im thinking 12x12x0.25" ABS sheet. What do you think? By the way, how long is the extrusion in your y-axis? Mine is 20.5" and it still seems to be a little short, even though I extended the original ord y-axis length by 4 inches. Im a bit puzzled on why it is short. Here are some pictures of the build.

Mark
Just got a email back from Roy and he has 3 Helios 300 beds left. I'm getting 2 of them so he should have 1 more. Here is his email support@panucatt.com

I have been making my Y 25" long and that seams to make it work nice.

That Printrbot looks really nice. I saw it at the Maker Faire last month. That was when I thought of making a large Ord Bot. They still dont have a price though.

Ya Its not in production yet but i wish it was. Ive had several designs that are similiar to both of these. I talked with Brook Drumm recently and found out that the Printrbot GO is discontuinued only due to re-structure and major upgrades. One of them might be a triple bowden extruder. Its a great platform and just needs a few things changed as well as a little updating. After I finish my PB Plus V2 I will prolly take on a project like this. My modified PB plus has about 16 usable inches of Z axis travel so the exxtra space will be nice.

You have 16" Z in your Printrbot? That is huge. Could you post a picture?

It wont let me post a pic cause my pic resolution is too high but here is a link to pics and write ups on the mods ive done. [reprapsquad.wordpress.com] its all on my wordpress site. I just ordered a RAMPS 1.4 setup with SD card but im not sure the best route to go with it as ive used a printrboard clone in the past. Ive changed cause eventually im going dual and then triple bowden. Any ideas?

Your printer looks good. I have no experience with multiple hotends/extruder. I just know you have to expand the x/y travel. Is this possible with your printer?

We are building a setup with 3 ubis style hot ends in a circular formation that will not use up much space instead of the side by side way of mounting. The hotends are custom made and dont take up much space. We have also been playing around with using 3 coldends feed essentially through one hotend for color mixing. The advantage of having 3 seperate hotends is being able to print support material as well as printing with different kinds of plastic on the same print. If i remember right the PB plus that i have has x=13inch, y=13inch and my z=18-19inch total. So it has plenty of space for me at least.
