RAMPS overheats FAST!!
August 03, 2013 02:34PM
I just got my RAMPS with pololu drivers, the y-axis overheats in seconds, Like count 1, 2 , OVERHEATED . The x-axis will run for considerably longer and have yet to try the z-axis (not home now ) . Is that normal? I am definetly adding a heat sink but it seems like it will not be effective enough. Is there something wrong with my Ramps? I have swapped the pololu's around and whichever driver is in the y-axis overheats, so it's not the drivers (I could be wrong)

Have you adjusted the pots on the drivers, they don't come adjusted, if they are set to high you will go into thermal protection on the drivers extremely quickly.

Yes I have adjusted them, any lower and the motor won't move, the motor has no belts on it right now. It doesn't matter which driver I put in the y-axis, they overheat. If I take a recentley overheated one and put it on the x-axis it runs fine.

sounds like you have a short in your motor wiring, or your motor is shorted internally. have you tried putting the x axis motor in the y axis plug. it could be a random solder blob on the board itself.

Yup, I have switched the motors around

Do you have heatsinks on your driver chips? They make a world of difference. Also a fan blowing through the fins helps even more.

I don;t have heatsinks yet, but it should run longer then 2 seconds correct?

it dose not take long if you have the current set too high.

Yeah, something wrong there - are you not able to rectify the situation with the vendor?

I should be able to rectifey it, I recieved a bad driver too and he is already shipping a new one, but I want to look over all the possiblilities first

Try to sweep drivers. it might be driver is bad.
I use heat sink and I add fan over the driver. Having no problem at all.

bad driver and bad conenction between the driver and arduino may have damaged the driver in the process, it works now. But the z-axis doesn't work at all. ????
