Threaded & Smooth Rod questions...
September 07, 2013 11:55PM
Hey everyone! My debut post here! Been reading for quite a while, and I'm finally getting the parts together to build a Prusa i3 (Single Plate). It's just something about that design that keeps jumping out at me!

I have a question on the Threaded and Smooth Rods...

I have the sizes I need, but, when I go to McMaster, or Fastenal to order them, there's so many specs on there I don't understand. DIN, Class, Pitch, I'm going nuts!

Could someone give me McMaster part #'s, or Fastenal part #'s, or anywhere else you all might have ordered from to help point me in the right direction? I would greatly appreciate it.

Everything is metric on my build as it was originally designed.

M5 Threaded Rods
M10 Threaded Rods
M8 Smooth Rods

Thanks in advance!

All McMaster part numbers:

1m pieces of M5 threaded rod, plain steel: 98861A060
1m pieces of M5 threaded rod, stainless: 94185A150
1m pieces of M10 threaded rod, zinc-plated: 93000A517
1m pieces of M10 threaded rod, stainless: 94185A165
Cheap M8 smooth rod: 88625K67
Better M8 smooth rod: 6112K15

I would recommend the better M8 smooth rod if you are planning on using linear bearings, and if you can afford it. The cheap stuff works, but the bearings start to wear grooves in it after a while.

NewPerfection - Thank you SO much for that! I've been looking most of the evening to find the rods... I haven't found much documentation on Fine thread, coarse thread, or anything other than lengths. I'm going to place my order now!

Again, Thank You!

No problem. Navigating McMaster or Fastenal can be a bit daunting at first.

Thanks for the list. Do you have any part numbers for the commonly used nuts/bolts/screws/washers etc. that make up the rest of the printer? I'm self sourcing a mendel90. My build is basically on hold right now while I try to make heads and/or tails out of the BOM. There are a TON of different fasteners for the 90.

I generally use black socket head cap screws for the majority of the fasteners. Use this part number to find the correct catalog page (just paste it into the McMaster search box): 91290A113
For nuts, I generally use similar to this part number: 90591A121 (You can get black-coated nuts too, but they are generally a fair bit more expensive.)
Washers: 91166A210

There's a huge variety to pick from, and it mostly comes down to personal preference. Do you want all black fasteners? All stainless? Or just whatever is cheapest?

for my current build cheap is good. Inexpensive is better. I don't mind paying what it costs for things to work. I have found that cheap isn't always worth it. Specifically for fasteners.....I believe cheap works.
