Ideas to make printed parts -- Cosmetically Appealing --
October 01, 2013 01:59PM
Hello!

I am attempting to make my 3d printed parts cosmetically appealing, hide the layers and path of the nozzle.

Any one has any clue how to achieve it relatively simply?

I have attempted some local paint supplier with their thickest paint, but no success. I tried some automotive pot putty, but it requires way to much work. Any ideas are welcome.

Thank You! smiling smiley

Google "acetone bath" for ABS smoothing.

Hi,
Can you post a photo of one of your printed parts as an example?

Acetone vapor bath is one good way. Another is Dupli-color filler primer (automotive) it is like the paint method you tried but is designed to fill in deep scratches like the body filler. It goes on in a very heavy coat without dripping and is a neutral gray color that can then be painted.

I have used all of the methods, each has it's use. I like vapor bath for many projects but it does have a wavy melted candle look to it. When I make replica props I prefer the Dupli-Color filler primer instead as it's a much sharper, flatter surface.

Hey!

Does the primer stick to the ABS plastic? Will it peel off if scratched with fingernails?
This is definitely worth experimenting with.

Thank you so much for your input!! grinning smiley
