Getting the filament to initially stick

Getting the filament to initially stick

I'm having a problem with my printer.

If I'm lucky enough to get it to stick at the beginning, the print goes great, and the part is hard as a rock to get off the build platform.

But getting it to stick, and not drag around the first couple centimeters of filament usually means I have to restart the print a couple times until I'm lucky.

How do I get the printer on that first initial blob to stick to the plate?

What are you printing with and on?

If PLA on glass then I found that cleaning the glass with alcohol (I use car de-icer) between prints is 100% reliable.

My chemist sells "nail varnish remover pads"
A little box of pads impregnated with nail varnish remover.

I wipe the bed every other print with one. As far as I can make out, it's oil/grease that's the enemy.

Once I touched the bed to feel the temp, then started to print and had a finger shaped unstuck bit in the middle of the first layer.
That convinced me.

Oh, and first layer slow, I print my first layer very slow (option in slic3r)

Cheers,

Dave

Sounds like your nozzle gap is too wide.

I'm using blue tape which works perhaps too well. Lemon juice on glass works too.
