What are you guys doing with your messed up prints? Is there a reason to save them? Or should I just throw in the recycle bin.

If you have or plan to make an extruder to make new filament you could stock pile it and reuse. I put mine in the recycle bin.

Yea, some people are working on home built units and I am pretty sure they have the files on how to online.

I found at least one DIY that can be built for around $100. I will probably give it a go. There was a few kickstarter ones as well.

That looks difficult to build, or expensive, but gives me a good idea. If I create something I will post it.

I have heard you can shred filament leftovers in a food processor from a thrift shop.

Over on the Filastruder forums I have seen people mention using coffee grinders too.

Yes, same basic process on a smaller scale.

if you shred scraps as soon as you get them, it should not take much effort to use a grinder.
