Any reviews on this?
December 30, 2013 11:01PM
I am looking at this package [www.ebay.com] but I can't find any reviews about it. I did write the company and they said the new Ramps they make uses 35V (just upgraded) caps and will easily work with 24v. Great, but no reviews at all? Either no one is using it (doubtful) or there is nothing bad to say so no one says anything.

Anyone use this or knows SainSmart?

Thank you.

SainSmart is legit. As far as the new Ramps, I have no idea. Heres Sainsmart website : sainsmart.com

I too am looking at a package similar to this, but it is still SainSmart. I was lead to believe that Ramps 1.4 was 12V not 24V? So when I come to plug it in I would have to use 24V rather than 12V?

(Forgive me if I am wrong, I am currently using Sanguinololu and this would be my upgrade)

Thanks.

No, it just means it will work on 24V if you want to.

To make it work on 24V simply plug it in but clip Diode 1 so your Arduino doesn't fry but by doing this you would need a USB power adapter or a Barrel power adapter that has a 12V power supply because the Arduino is, at most, 20V so 24V would smoke it.

What 24V does is allows hotter temps in the bed and the hot end AND it allows them to get to their operating temps much much faster (instead of say 15minutes it takes 5 minutes).

12V is fine right out of the box.

Ramps has to have caps rated for 24v for it to work, something to check before doing this.

Thanks for the replies. I saw a youtube video of someone using a dual extruder set up with the SainSmart package. He used 12V so I think I will use 12V also.

On another note, finding a suitable 24V supply in the UK is impossible for a decent price, so 12V is a no brainer.

Thanks!

As I said on the newest Sainsmart they are but otherwise check your caps or expect them to blow.

In the states 25 dollars for 15A 24V.

Would you be able to link me to it? I will see if I can track one down in UK.

It would be much appreciated!

Thanks

I don't like it, and in their pictures you see there are errors in the LCD panel.

If you sell a good product, use good pictures.

The Gadgets3D kit is also great, and I have bought it and haven't had a regret yet. There were some problems with the delivery of a new product because the new batch that the factory was making wasn't done in time, but I got it send afterwards and worked fine! Also, I received a Heatbed MKII from G3D that was not flat, it was incredibly warped, so much that you couldn't fasten it well to the print bed, so they send me a new one without extra cost. I can only say that they have my full support with their store and they have a warehouse in Poland for EU and a warehouse in China for international postage. However Poland and China may not be the first countries to expect quality from, I can highly recommend the G3D kits.

G3D apparently also doesn't use a clone Arduino Mega, but they use an original one and their stepper drivers.. Man, I haven't had any trouble at all with those ones, the machine just runs great on them with 2.5A stepper motors.

Compared to the bad bad bad Sanguino that I have on my other printer this kit was a breeze to work with smiling smiley

If you want guaranteed quality, you can get a 24V 360W from RS for about £120, or ebay for as little as £20 for somewhat random level of quality.

Alternatively if you don't mind a little soldering, you can get 12V ex-server PSUs on ebay very cheap. I just got a 750W 12V Dell PSU (60A!) for about £15 delivered. That's 25p per Amp!
Also plenty of 12v 400W (32A) for £12 or less. Only drawback is the noisy fans, but on the 750W that is easy to adjust.

These ex-server PSUs usually go in a skip, waste of perfectly good kit.

It arrived today and Sainsmart lied to me or something as they promised that it would do 24v and 35v caps had been on it since the beginning of December. Well, all of that is fine and dandy but what arrived in the box was one with 16v caps.

With RAMPS 1.4, if you want to run the heated bed at 24V, then all you have to do is to connect the 24V supply to the + and - bed terninals. I don't think those caps are on the + supply for the bed. You can still run the rest (Arduino, stepper controllers and hot end) at 12V by using another power supply for the other + and - supply terminals.

Every last capacitor was 16V and it is noted everywhere that they must be 35V (I even saw the picture, and was told, which ones MUST be >=24V).

Basically every large capacitor has to 24V, or greater, or the magic smoke will appear. The tiny ones in a cluster is fine as they are not used for the hotend or the heated bed.

Look at the lower left corner of the schematic and you'll see that the bed +12V input (X4-1) is labeled as +12V2. This does not go anywhere in the circuit except to the terminal going to the heated bed (PS1) in the box called "Heaters and Fans". The only thing that might be damaged due to overvoltage on the circuit is LED2 and the fuse F2.

This has been done:
[forums.reprap.org]

If you really want to run your bed at 24V, then the safe way is to bypass RAMPS and wire +24V directly to the bed with an inline fuse. The ground for the 24V supply should still be connected as usual to X4-2.

But you still have a valid complaint to Sainsmart about the caps since you won't be able to run the whole board at 24V.
